Seaman Sisco Owes Me $20
And the man has been AWOL of late.
Earth to Sisco: You owe me $20 for our bet about Wolfowitz. The Assistant Secretary is back in Baghdad like I said he would probably be, given his announced intention to visit Iraq every quarter.
Please acknowledge your liability and I will provide a PO box address for you to mail your funds. I will accept personal checks, cash, or a cashiers check. Please, no lottery tickets. Or I'll go double or nothing if you can make it inneresting.
I'll be traveling until Saturday, so don't interpret silence on my part as forgiveness of debt.

Monte -- Yo, I already replied to you yesterday in the first thread you pulled up, man, so not to come off please as if I'm a shirker. I asked you to PM me your snail mail address so I could pay up. So far, no reply. I can't pay you unless I have an address to mail it to, bud.
And I was a Petty Officer, 3rd Class (heavy on the petty), thanks, not a seaman. At least, not for very long. Thank goodness. I never did like chipping paint. Still don't.
And as far as I-man being AWOL here it's because I'm sick of the Alley's way of talking politics, which is like a pong game. But nothing ever happens. This guy says this, the other guy says that, repeat the former again in different words or the same words, and so on. And truth is, I've opted out these days from American show biz, I mean "politics." I'm not even reading the papers. It's a great liberation of sorts.
Instead or reading Chairman Mao
I think I'll go and milk my cow.
(Wendell Berry)
I'm finding being a horseguy a lot more interesting than the Alley, thanks, and it takes up enough of my time, working every day (actual labor, not pushing paper or electrodes around), that I don't have any anymore to waste on discussions that go nowhere and never will.
Lastly, I'd rather talk about music here, frankly, something we do all too little of these days. I'm so sick of the Bushists and anyone likely to oppose them, at that level, that I've opted out for my own mental health. My views mean nothing in this society as it stands today, and I'm tired of repeating myself, and even more tired, of course, of hearing others with whom I disagree repeat themselves.
Anyways, I have your Jackson in my pocket. Send me your snail. I pay my bets, man, and never intended otherwise. You really think I'd go AWOL over a twenty? Give it up, man! I've lost more twenties in my time than I'll likely have in me hands again for the duration.

Gary,
I'm in agreement with you about the Alley. It's been leaving me feeling rather down, too, lately. Political sniping only gets you so far, and then it's hard to take. I wish there was a more active discussion about jazz on this site, but I guess this is just the way it is. I also wish that some of the Alley's most active posters would also occasionally post something in the Jazz forum.

Wish on, man. Music it seems has long been the last thing that gets discussed here. I don't know why but I think it's because so many of us have been communicating here for so long that we already know each other's tastes and what have you and have already discussed the musical past repeatedly and repeatedly again.
I don't think much will change that until there's a significant increase in new blood or participation by the many lurkers.
I'm going to try to do my part by opting out of political discussions since I've already opted out of politics, and in any case, my views are irrelevant today and no one knows that more deeply than I.

Up for Monte, since he chose to besmirch my rep without reading replies to his own posts. I still haven't received an address from him.

C'mon G, I always read your posts and find them well stated even when I totally disagree with them.
The problems with this bbs regarding music discussion is that we don't have Reynolds dropping seed crystals into our supersaturated solution!!! Plus we grew way too dependent on him doing that.
I'm signing off now to listen to tunes; I'll be back to do my part!!!

Monte and I have met in person at one of the JC hangs. There wasn't any blood or even bruises. I have friends, actually, who are every bit as conservative, though not as doctrinaire, who I hang with and like a lot.
Monte -- What's up with the not sending the address, anyway? Hey, if you don't want the 20 bucks, it's alright with me, but you won the bet, fair and square, and it's yours if you want it.

Gary, I sent you an address on Feb. 9. Check your PM. It's in my PM outbox, so I know it was sent.
I apologize for gloating clumsily. I was running out the door when I started this thread, and for the damage to your rep I am entirely at fault. I'm sure the damage is neither lasting or substantial. By the way, nice reference to Wendell Berry. He's a poet I really enjoy. Especially his slim tome A Part.

I have more liberal friends than conservative ones. Hell, I have more communist friends than conservative ones. And never once has a political discussion with pals come to anything more than raised voices and annoyed dissing. Let it always be so.
Now please send that Jackson. I've already promised it to Ed Gillespie at the RNC.

What about sports threads that are 80% about (personal) likes or dislikes of players?

Monte -- Sorry for the notes if you sent it, but it's not in my in-box so please send another PM or email me at sisco at pshift dot com and I will mail it forthwith.
By the way, I only have two commie friends left (talking real friends, not just people you know), and one of those told me she no longer thinks of herself as a leftist, either, for the same reasons as I. I never made all that many lasting friendships in my years in the left, probably because in my time it was so filled with vacationing bourgeois and trustfunding poseurs (at least in the States). At any rate with too many people I knew for certain I could not trust to cover my back when the shit was serious. Those can be named, easily. And the one I know for sure about because he did, more than once, is now a registered Republican in San Diego!
Most of my friends are nonpolitical hipsters or some kind of libertarian type, whether party or repub or nonparty. I get along well with people of that mentality if they can live with mine (which isn't always the case). In Vermont, for all its (mistaken) rep as a leftist haven, you'd be one isolated mofo if you didn't have conservative friends, I'll tell you what. Hell, even my man Roots is a repub, though not of the knuckledragger type that dominates the party today.

good plan: Saturday night, Valentine's Day, a Batali restaurant that doesn't take reservations for small parties, let's see how that works out...
