What Happened to Speakeasy this Week?

This is the first time I could get on since Monday. I kept getting the bar at the top, and a blank screen under it. I know I'm not the only one, since I got emails from people in different parts of the world. Yet I see that there are posts from the last couple of days.

I'm confused.

Your IE must be corrupted (click to repair IE).

I haven't had any problems.

I got a "database error" message for about a half a day, but that was it.

It happened at home as well as the office I was working at. However, today is the first time I rebooted at home since the weekend. I know Jazzy Mary & Jan Strom were also locked out, so it wasn't just me.

Oh yeah, now that I recall, it was down for a while on the weekend. Not long, though. Maybe half a day.

All I know is that there was apparently a problem with the JC server and/or software on Sunday and part of Monday, and the site went down. This is a portion of the error message I got Sunday evening: There seems to have been a slight problem with the database. Once the board came back up on Monday, I had to Log In again, but it's worked fine for me ever since.

Moné can probably provide some detail since he worked on whatever problem(s) required attention.

Welcome back, Pete.

This is what I got:

Warning: Access denied for user: 'jazzcorner@localhost' (Using password: YES) in /home/virtual/site2/fst/var/www/html/speakeasy/admin/db_mysql.php on line 40

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Access denied for user: 'jazzcorner@localhost' (Using password: YES) in /home/virtual/site2/fst/var/www/html/speakeasy/admin/db_mysql.php on line 40

There seems to have been a slight problem with the database.

Did it really say "apologise," or did you translate it into Canadian?

Yep!

That's funny that you'd question the spelling of "apologise", Pete. Before posting "Yep!", I checked, and that was a completely accurate cut and paste from Cem.

I was able to access all of JC except Speakeasy. I tried to email Chris A. through the AAJ bulletin board to find out what was up, but it didn't work.

I get an error message all the time that says "cannot find server or DNS error" and no matter what I try I can't get back on JC after that til I've clicked on about ten other sites. JC is the only website where I get that message.

Pete -- I had your problem this morning, several times.

I was having the same problem as Pete, until I downloaded netscape and that seemed to work. The problem was the old hyperlink was corrupt (or whatever the term, it didn't work anymore). Lois e mailed me the correct one, and here I am again.

I spent most of yesterday ogling a hilarious thread over at Organissimo (most of the posts where by or directed at the dreaded DEEP.)

I really missed Jazz Corner!

Perhaps Mone or Bresnahan can verify, but I believe the source of those DNS errors may be your ISP.

For the past two days all I got was a blank page--I was in the middle of the third step over at JC'ers Anonymous when it occurred to me to e-mail Lois. She gave me a URL that got me in.

The site was down for only half a day. I was unaware through which URLs people were connecting to the site, and I think in putting up the "down for maintenance" messages, Lois may have inadvertantly misplaced a redirect. Nothing we did should have caused DNS issues. That's something on your ISP's end.

It would be inappropriate for me to discuss exactly what went wrong, but for a while, "a slight problem with the database" was the only clue that the server was giving me. The eventual solution involved wading through config files making sure everything was what it should have been.

In any event, JC right now is a bit more solvent than it was before, and hopefully future changes will improve it even more in that regard. Whatever doesn't kill JazzCorner makes it stronger!

Translation: Mone spilled a cup of coffee on the server when he got excited watching a Sergei Fedorov goal and the system took a sh** for a couple of days while the thing dried out.

By the way, Mone, I'm not crazy about that beard you're sporting in the picture Ron posted. I'd suggest trimming that down a little.

An annoying prick,
Larry
