Have you ever won something?

My son just won a pair of skates ($400)

I'm not much of a "lucky " person, Maybe it's because I never buy lottery tickets

I get lucky all the time. But I can't say I've ever won anything.

Jazzzoline,

Not that I tried to send you a PM or anything, but your PM box might be full and not accepting any more messages. I would know that for sure if I tried to send you one, but I'm just speculating wildly that it is possible, since I certainly didn't try and do that. I just sometimes think of things that might possibly be, just in case they ever really do come up, so I'm prepared if they do.

Discreet,
Larry

Back in college, I got banned from the radio station's contests because I was winning once a month (the stated limit).
Got me a lot of nice promo LPs that way.

I used to win concert tickets from radio stations all the time (WKCR & WBGO). In the old days you used to have to answer a jazz trivia question, or identify a recording, so I stood a better chance. My chances diminished when it became "caller number 7."

Among the concerts I saw for free:

Ornette at Carnegie Hall (late 80's) -- awful show, with the really awful Mari Okubo as opener. Happily Ornette Has redeemed himself.

Vanguard Jazz Orchestra at the Vanguard.

I think I won all of these shows at the Blue Note in the same year: MJQ, Lionel Hampton's Golden Men of Jazz, JJ Johnson & Johnny Griffin double bill.

I can't remember specifically the others I've won, but there were many. I was on a real streak for a while.

The one time I won tickets from WKCR (to see Max Roach and the WSQ at St. John the Divine, around 1982), the dj offered the prize to the first person who could identify the drummer on the upcoming cut. I heard the first drum and cello notes from Hemphill's "The Hard Blues". Piece o' cake.

When I was in college, there was this radio show "A Midnight Storm" w/ a smooth talking d.j. type show. He had a pair of tickets to see Herbie Hancock to the first caller who could tell him John Coltrane's B-day. I won and the concert was in this big "in the round" theatre. Herbie was good but I really remember the bass player--Jaco Pastorious!

I won many 45 's in high school from an AM radio station for knowing the word from an announced definition. I also $250 on a 50 cent state lottery ticket (3 numbers in sequence).

I have a friend who won a Mercedes Benz in a raffle and another friend won the Pennsylvania State Lottery TWICE (the first win got him roughly $20,000 @ year for 20 years and the second got him roughly $300,000 @ year for 20 years).

Back when people weren't so uptight about such things, I won a couple football pools at my workplace.

I won a record once.

And a Frisbee in Junior HS...I still have it, too

I haven't won many things over the years, but I vividly remember what I believe was the first thing I won about 50 years ago. I was a yo-yo freak in elementary school, and I practiced so much that I became pretty proficient, at least for a 10-11 year old. One day during school it was announced that a professional from Duncan yo-yo's would be giving a demonstration after school on the sidewalk in front of our school, Coconut Grove Elementaryl. I brought my favorite Duncan to school that day, and most of the school day was a blur after my safety patrol duties. After school, a large group of kids gathered on the front sidewalk and were mesmerized by this incredible "Yo-Yo Man". Then, he asked all of us to show him our best tricks. Apparently I impressed him sufficiently to win the prize that day ... a hand carved Duncan yo-yo of my choice from his kit. He had a carver with him who carved my name and a design into the wooden yo-yo on-the-spot. I was in heaven.

Oh yeah, and I won TONS of marbles playing "keepsies" as a kid, too.

Maybe I need to move to Pennsylvania.

One day many years ago I stopped off at a convenience store to buy some munchies, and impulsively bought a lottery ticket (a rare occurrence). It hit 5 out of 6, missing the 6th number by a single digit. The payout was several thousand $. That was exciting.

This was back in NJ in case Ron reads this and insists on moving to PA.

I've played the lottery exactly twice. Both times I won five dollars.

I won a Brooke Shields poster as a kid.

I held a six-year dynasty in a fantasy baseball league, winning $220 every year and in the interest of competitive balance, retiring undefeated.

I won a 24" television set in some drawing I don't even remember entering.

I won an HP computer in some vendor sweepstakes and exchanged it for cash (cash was far more functional than the computer).

I won ice cream cones at Steve's for knowing what Chuck Berry's only number one hit was (easy pickings for this group) and for knowing who the first horse to win the Triple Crown was (Sir Barton). I also won a jar of pennies for having the closest guess as to how many were in it. The guy in the coin store didn't believe me when I told him I had estimated the volume of a penny, divided it into the volume of the jar and then taken off 10% for air space between the pennies.

I also won the heart of a fair lady, but that was luck, not skill.

I "won" two trips to Hawaii, including R/T airfare and two weeks hotel accomodations for Patti and me, but that was based upon job performance while working in radio.

I also won $20.00 the one and only time I bought a lottery ticket ... in Seattle a few years ago.

Ron, I hope you still have that Duncan!

Looking back, I'm kind of amazed at how many things I've won. I've ever stopped enteriing contests for things I don't really, really want as I don't want to use up all of my luck.

Here are two of the contests of skill that I've won:

I won a Slingerland snare drum at a high school jazz festival. (The drum was stolen while packing up after a gig two weeks later.)

In the '80s, I won the grand prize of $175 in WimblePond, a goofy three-day badminton championship. I'm not a speedy athlete but I have great hand/eye coordination and a long reach--I was running these arrogant tennis pros into the ground, one right after the other!

Oh, Doug, how I wish I still had that Duncan, not to mention the thousands of marbles and baseball cards, among other things. Don't get me started or I'll get crazy.

Losing a Slingerland snare drum to a thief after winning it is tragic! What a bummer! Fortunately, I still have mine, given to me by my parents on Christmas day, 1957.

I won $10 from bizrate.com for taking an online survey. I thought that was pretty cool since I had always believed that those "win money for taking surveys" things were phony.

Won $7 playing Powerball last year. Wow.

Many yeras ago, I won a electric guitar !!!!

It's a KAWAI in a natural wood design. But it's not in use right now, I have to re-install the pickups and strings first. I'm not a guitrist, so it can take a while until I get it all together....

Looks a little like this bass:

I won tickets to see the Jim Rose Circus once while in grad school, courtesy of WXYC in Chapel Hill. What a show.

I also won a year's supply of gasoline about three year's back - that was most excellent. You can spend a hell of a lot of $$$ on gas in a year.
