What was the first CD you bought ?
When the first CDs appeared on the music stores shelves, I swore I would NEVER spend $25 for a CD.
HAH!
It took me a while to buy one. The first was "SO" Peter Gabriel.

I can't remember which was the very first, but I know "Take Five" was one of the first. Still have it, too.

I really had to rack my brain to remember but I'm almost positive it was Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde. I recall feeling perplexed that they could fit 2 albums onto one little disc.

I think I bought 4 or 5 the day I got my first CD player. I know that the first "classic" I replaced was Miles' "Porgy & Bess," and I also bought Abdullah Ibrahim's "Anthem for the New Nations," but I can't remember the others. I think this was ca. 1986.

That's ok; I worked with a real toolbox who couldn't believe they could fit a memo on a diskette. That brought the blade closer to the vein.

My first three CDs were gifts from my father:
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
Tom Waits - Frank's Wild Years
Metallica - And Justice for All
I still love all three of 'em. Thanks, Pop!

As did I (bought 4 or 5 the day I got the player). I think the first was Yes' Close to the Edge, which I haven't played in years and probably won't spin anytime soon. But I had this idea at the time that it was the kind of music that would "sound sooooo much better" on CD that it seemed like a worthy choice. Looking back, it wasn't, but what the hell.

I remember that one was The Beach Boys' Christmas Album. I think another was Manfred Mann Chapter III's first album.
This was in December of '88. I think all of America got a CD player before I did. I just wasn't inclined to make the move. But one day I went to a Turtle's record store and saw that all LPs had been removed, and I figured that I had no choice.

Lucky guy, Jason! ... for having a cool dad like that.
I got a bunch of cd's first, before I could afford a player. I don't recall the very first one, but I have a vague memory of the hippy mother lode:
The Band - Last Waltz
Neil Young - Decade
Garcia/Saunders/Kahn/Vitt - Live at Keystone
Little Feat - Dixie Chicken or Feats Don't Fail Me Now
Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead

Doug, you are so much cooler than I am that I am ashamed to draw breath.
My first LP: Shaun Cassidy (by none other than)
It's a wonder my parents let me go on living after that ignominious start to a listening career.

Meet The Beatles was definitely my first LP. I still own the phonograph it was played on (long busted but still a keeper).

First CD was "Beggars Banquet." My LP was fried.
First LP was a cutout of "The Who Sell Out" at a Jewel Tea grocery for 50 cents.

First cassette tape: Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
First CD: Jesus Jones - Doubt
I was a freshman in high school when I got my first CD player and first CD. On my 15th birthday, my father drove me to Circuit City so I could buy a CD player with birthday money. I was able to get one CD with the money I had left over, and Jesus Jones was that CD. Seems like such a long time ago, but it was 1991 and CD's had already been around for a while by then.

A bunch of blues CD's received as holiday gifts in 1993 as a result of my strong interest in the music at the time. I'm not sure if I remember all of them, but there was definitely one called "B.B. King: Blues Summit," and a reissue compilation of Lowell Fulson's funkier work from the 60's (Tramp, etc.) Gatemouth Brown's Pressure Cooker record might have been part of that batch as well; a few months later I saw Gatemouth in person and got him to sign it. Almost exactly ten years ago, in fact.

For some reason I never had "Meet the Beatles," but I did have "Introducing the Beatles" (Vee-Jay), which was basically the "Please Please Me" album which American Capitol wasn't interested in releasing at the time! I think my first LP purchase may have been the Stones' "12 X 5."

Genesis - Selling England By The Pound.
In 1989, when I didn't even have my own CD player. Had to wait a year for that.

Love that 'young guy' business, Pete -- I turn 60 in July. (Big party, live band, dance all day and night, you're all invited, details to follow.)
I've been trying unsuccessfully to recall the first tape I bought, but I can't. But I think the first 8-track I bought was The Beatles' "Rock'n'Roll."

My first 8-track was Led Zeppelin II. My first 45 rpm single was Peter, Paul, and Mary "Puff The Magic Dragon".
Speaking of firsts, the first VHS tape I made was of the first several episodes represented by my avatar. I bought the VCR just to tape the episodes. They played them weekly on WNJN (channel 50).
