Mone: I need network help
This should be done via PM, but I'm an exhibitionist. You're a Network Guy, right? Well, I have a cable modem and wireless router setup at home and I want to share files through it. Is it possible? Because if it is, I'm looking in all the wrong places.

It's possible, but it depends on your setup. So you've got, what, multiple laptops with wireless ethernet.... they can all connect to the internet via the router/modem, yeah? What brand of Windows are you working?

Yeah, that's me. One cable modem, a wireless router, one desktop connected to the router via ethernet cable, two laptops via wireless cards. Windows XP on all 3 computers. The transfers involve large chunks of data, so it might make more sense to connect the laptop to a cable as well. Then I get the 100 Mbps instead of the wireless 11 Mbps. But either way, after setting the folders to allow sharing, I can't locate them on the other computer(s).
Comcast modem, Netgear wireless router.

Okay, first:
You need to enable the IPX/SPX protocol on all machines if it isn't already:
1. Open Network Connections
2. Under LAN or High-Speed Internet, click the local area connection for the home or small office network.
3. Under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
4. In Local Area Network Properties, click Install.
5. In Select Network Component Type, click Protocol, and then click Add.
6. Click NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol, click OK, and then click Close.
7. In Network Connections, on the Advanced menu, click Advanced Settings.
8. On the Adapters and Bindings tab, under Connections, click the local area connection on which you are enabling IPX/SPX file and print sharing.
9. Under Bindings for Local Area Connection, under File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, clear the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box, and then click OK.
Also, the computers will have to have the same Workgroup name so they can see each other:
1. Right click on My Computer
2. Select "Properties"
3. (going from memory here... I'm sitting at a Mac) Click "Computer Name"
I think from there you'll see how to change your Workgroup name. Both sharing computers have to have the same name.
Try all that and let me know if the shares show up.

Thanks a lot, Mone. I'll run through this on the computers and see what I get. I'll let you know.

I have a problem. My g/f's PC won't log on to windows now. This is a PC she uses at work, so there is a user name and password prompt that now isn't working. Did I mess up the settings so that she can't log into windows?
I probably should have mentioned that before, but I figured I'd just undo it later.
Dumb,

Oops. Yeah, you need to put the old workgroup/domain name back in then. Are you completely stuck at the login screen or is there another way in? Can you get through in safe mode?

I tried the safe menus, but I can't seem to figure out where I need to go. The regular safe mode gives me the login prompt with no box to change domain name. I suppose I can have a guy at work just fix it for me. No idea how to get into the settings I need to fix it. I can get to a command prompt, but no clue what to do.

Hey mone, how come you jump to help Nagel and ignore poor Pete with his inability to horizontally navigate, huh?

I wouldn't think of it, Michael. You look much too comfortable sitting in that dining room chair, in that handsome suit, reviewing that menu.

That's a worse offer than the "suggestive sell" stuff we were talking about in the fast food thread.

Have the network administrator at your girlfriend's work do it. Er, unless you two work in the same place. Your guy wouldn't know the administrative password for the machine.
Just tell him you changed the workgroup in order to get it on your home network. Which may be against company policy, but if she flirts with him, it should be okay.

Because I was on a freakin' Mac at work and I don't have Netscape anyway. I have no idea where Pete's horizontal nav bar is. I'll see if I can find any documentation on missing nav bars.

We do work together, Mone, but they'll fix it. I had no idea what a stupid thing I was doing.
I want a restraining order put out on Michael. I just realized he isn't joking at all.

Everything's cool now, baby. We're up and running. Thanks for the help, Moné. It didn't work out with the LAN, but I'm going to try setting up the workgroup using the wireless connection and see if that works. It won't be as fast, but 11 Mbps isn't too bad, and it shouldn't destroy the LAN that's needed to connect to the office network.
Rationalizing away what will almost certainly result in massive and unrecoverable data loss,
Larry
