Bali Jazz Fest

BALI INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL 13-14 Feb 2004 Bali the Island of the Gods also known as the Isle of Paradise. Known also to be rich in its culture. The Jakarta Jazz Society(JJS) has chosen this island as its venue for the first event that the Jakarta Jazz Society will be holding for the year 2004.

In coordination with Metro TV and InterContinental Resort Bali, JJS is organizing “Bali International Jazz Festival”. This event will take place at the helipad of the InterContinental Resort Bali, Jimbaran , on the 13th and 14th of February 2004. It will be held open air as normally done for international jazz festivals abroad.

Musicians that will be performing in this festival come from Holland, Japan, The Philipines as well as Indonesia. There will be two stages where musicians will perform alternately.

SASKIA LAROO Quartet from Holland. A trumpetist also known as the female ‘Miles Davis’ from Europe will be accompanied by Warren Gilbert Byrd (Keyboard) and Michael Lamar Cannon (Drums) both from the USA and Cord Heineking (Bass) from Holland.

KRAKATAU From Indonesia. The Group Members Are Dwiki Dharmawan (Keyboard & Syntesizer), Pra Budi Dharma (Electric Fretless Bass), Trie Utami (Vocal), Adhe Rudhiana (Kendang And Percussion), Yoyon Dharsono, Zainal Arifin (Multi Traditional Instrument), Eddy Parameansyah(Drum). The Distinctive sound of Krakatau music originates from ancient Gamelan tonal system called ‘S’lendro’, Adapts western diatonic musical elements, and is energized by modern feels of Jazz, Rock and Pop. The Uniqueness of Krakatau music Is indescribable by any exotic line of words, the only way to find out is that, "One must see and hear the difference".

TOTS TOLENTINO (saxes, wood flute, shakuhachi) and his Buhay group from the Philippines. Critics have described his playing as passionate, articulate and authoritative. Probably the most identifiable sax sound in the Philippines today, he continues to carve out a niche for himself in the Asian jazz scene as member of Terumasa Hino’s Allstar band Jeremy Monteiro’s Asiana and collaborations with Asia’s premiere guitarist, Eugene Pao.

YOSHIKO KISHINO & her friends from Japan. She has released over 30 cd’s under the GRP label. Yoshiko has often worked in collaboration with acclaimed musicians such as Ernie Watts, Harvey Mason(USA), Terumasa Hino(Japan) and other renown jazz players.

IDANG RASJIDI & his Friends. Idang, one of Indonesia’s jazz pianist has earned an international reputation through his participation in various jazz festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival and festivals in other countries .

BUBI CHEN, our ‘Art Tatum’ from Indonesia, undoubtedly a fine pianist. Together with Tony Scott and other leading jazz musicians from Indonesia have recorded an album entitled Djanger Bali in Germany. It would be a great pity if you miss the performance of this legendary artist.

Because of Jakarta Jazz Society’s aim to be included in the international jazz festival calendar, it is planning to hold similar events in the years to come.

Come and experience the feel of jazz in mystical Bali!.
