So you missed vibraphonist Matthias Lupri when he made his first visit to Portland last January and had to listen to all your friends tell you that you missed a great show. Well here’s a second chance; the Maine Jazz Alliance is bringing the Matthias Lupri Quintet, with saxophonist Mark Turner back to Portland on Friday, March 5, 2004. Life rarely gives us second chances and when they are offered we should take them, so join us st the Center for Cultural Exchange on Friday evening, March 5 at 8:00 PM and discover the music and imagery of a jazz star in the making.
Vibist Matthias Lupri pays homage to Gary Burton, by internalizing what he has learned from his mentor and creating music with its own distinct voice. In addition to new material, acclaimed vibraphonist, Lupri will perform material from his CD "Same Time Twice." Lupri’s quintet consists of Verve recording artist and saxophonist extraordinaire Mark Turner, whose rising star on the international jazz scene is being closely watched along with that of his frequent collaborator, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkle. Rounding out the quintet are Nate Radly on guitar, Thomson Kneeland on bass and Jordan Perlson on drums.
Born in Germany in 1964, Matthias Lupri grew up in the United States and Canada. He returned to the US to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston where he was the protégé of world renowned vibist Gary Burton. After graduating from Berklee, Lupri's has spent his time performing and composing. His groups have appeared at many clubs and festivals as well as on television shows and radio programs throughout the US, Canada and Europe. The recordings of his original compositions have consistently appeared on the Top 40 Jazz Radio Lists of Gavin, CMJ and Chart Attack Magazine. Lupri’s recent performances included dates at the The Knitting Factory and Cornelia St Jazz Clubs in New York City, Litchfield Jazz Festival, and the Boston Globe Jazz Festival.
The All Music Guide notes that, "vibraphonist Matthias Lupri has gained international attention because of his mastery of this percussion instrument, a rare one in the jazz idiom, but one that he induces to speak in a beautiful array of musical colors and textures."
