Huge CD collection for sale ...

I have nothing at all to do with the seller. I stumbled over this yesterday and asked the guy to send me the list.

Lots of the better stuff listed on eBay (Mosaics, etc.), lots already gone, but still PLENTY left as of now.

That's the guy: eBay contact: e-mail form

That's the list he sent me: Excel Spreadsheet (originally 1147 items, 1.6 MB)

The man his selling his dad's jazz collection. Always a sad thing. Do have a look. Some good prices and stuff for everyone.

[Edit: Link to one of the more expensive items so you can read about why the collection is being sold: Ellington Centennial. Don't let the price of this one scare you. The list contains many bargains].

Edit: Hal Farber, the man selling this collection, asked me to add a link to his eBay store. After I had sent him a short mail about having posted the links here, he wrote:

"We have an on-line store- the link is http://half.ebay.com/shops/shops.jsp?seller_id=1229567 but you can only buy from this site if you are in US. At least you can see the actual listings we have on-line. There are many more which are on the spreadsheet but not listed on the site."

I'll grant you that this is quite a collection. However, someone went through the listings with a fine tooth comb and just about every title is at or above max market value. A couple come close to "bargain" status but they are few. Some, like the rare Billy Strayhorn disc "Cue For Saxophone" (that has eluded me for years) are way too rich for my blood. Yeah, I want this and yeah, it's hard to find, but $50? I can wait.

Later,
Kevin

Edit: Hey! A hard-to-find and great CD for under $10: Just You, Just Me

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I just wanted to take a moment to say "Thank You!" for all of the support we have received during the sale of my father's jazz collection. Mom & I want to share with you how painful (and time consuming) it is to liquidate his collection. We spent many hours travelling with him to jazz shops in NYC, ordering for him on the internet, and doing mail orders for him. It would have been infinitely easier to dump this off to a used record shop and let a stranger profit from my dad's efforts.

Mom & I cataloged the collection from dad's files. We searched the web for each CD and priced them 10-15% below the lowest cost we could find for active CDs and for others that were not active, we averaged the last selling prices that were available. As for the $50 CD above, that was the AVERAGE of the last 3 sales on half.com for that CD. For the gentleman who went through this with a fine-tooth comb, please get back to us where we are above the other active offerings and we will reduce our prices accordingly.

So now understanding our price structure, we are willing to offer any collector from this board a 5% discount and reduced shipping costs for direct sales ($2.25 first CD/$1.25 each additional vs half.com $2.49/1.49). If we don't have to pay a commission, why should you?

For those of you with families who may not share your love of jazz, you would do them a great service now by cataloging your collection as your legacy to them so they could pass your joy of jazz to others who would appreciate the music. If they don't like jazz, consider it a life insurance policy for them without a monthly premium.

The only happiness we have gained from this excercise is that in our mourning for "Tom", the music he loved will play on with people from Europe to Asia to South America and throughout North America through those who have purchased items from the collection.

Sorry this was so long,

Thanks,
Hal Farber

Hal,

I have often wondered what would happen with my collection on the day I'm not around to appreciate it. Your father would be proud for all the work you're doing to make sure that these Jazz CDs get out to other Jazz fans. I think my wife would just rent a truck and drive the whole pile to Stereo Jack's.

I went through the list and I was wondering how you came up with the prices. I thought it was weird to see one OJC going for $6.99 and another going for $8.99 when they both list for the same price. Thanks for clarifying.

As for that Billy Strayhorn, I do not fault you for asking the average of what it has recently sold for. You are free to ask whatever you want. I hope you get it too. I am just not willing to pay that much. That's my problem, not yours. I expect some day I'll walk into some CD shop and find this CD... patience is a virtue in this hobby. If I wait long enough, it'll probably be reissued in 24 bit sound, too.

FYI, in your half.com listings, there are a whole bunch of CDs (around 9) by Lionel Hampton that have "Dexter Gordon" listed under "Artist".

Later,
Kevin
