congrats on your very first post. You wouldn't by any chance be involved in this event, would you, say, in a PR capacity?
Do post again on April 8 and tell us how jazz legend Herbie Hancock performed. Sadly, I can't make it out to Indiana University on the 7th - there are far too many states in the way.

I'd go, but my wife won't lend me the Lear Jet.

Gentle Giant was this really necessary? I know you just had to post that, right?

I love Herbie Hancock! I wish he will play in my hometown one day.
I know some people thinks he hasn´t done a decent album in many years but I recommend this album very much:
He breaks no new ground but it´s a great album anyway!!
Yes! He really is a true jazz legend!

Personally, I'm not really shocked or disapproving that PR people etc. include web message boards in their effort to drum up business for their jazz-musician clients. The annoying thing is that sometimes they don't clearly announce their purpose in the subject line.
Lois, how about changing the name of the "Festivals" section to "Festivals and Concert Announcements"? It would then be clear to conscientious PR folks that they should post their concert announcements there.

Agreed on the Hancock/Brecker/Hargrove album - mostly dense or intense, or both, with some very fine, burning, solos by Brecker. I'd better give that a listen when I get home.
Hancock is another legend whom I've never seen live. I used to play the Hancock/Metheny/Holland/deJohnette DVD for some of my rock-musician friends, thinking it might lure them into jazz - and it mildy succeeded though everyone just kept asking me what was wrong with the piano player (Herbie being his usual dissonantly harmonic self).

I saw Herbie live last year for the first time, and he did not disappoint, whatever one might think of his recent recorded efforts. His band was in crack form, too - Scott Colley is one of my favorite young bassists. If you get the chance, he's well worth hearing. I note that he is playing with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette some this Spring - that would be a trio worth hearing, but damn!

Tom, I think that's an excellent idea - then I can move all those gig announcements out of news

Lois, how about a separate forum for individual gig announcements, but clustered on the Speakeasy homepage next to festivals? I think in general the gig announcements tend to be "read only," while the festivals threads tend to have some give and take among posters, potential visitors, etc.
I like the way the prior year's festivals forum has been kept available for reference.

I meant no harm, nor did I intend to offend. I just don't like threads in the discussion areas that aren't intended as conversation-starters. I think Jazz Corner is above that.
Besides, hawking for a concert in Indiana when we've got an international audience here? Even if it's free to post here, there's not much of a cost/benefit associated with a message of such limited scope. I used to do PR, and I wouldn't bother posting a single show here, especially when it's someone as well known and marketable as Herbie Hancock (the jazz legend).
Also besides, it's fun to veer occasionally from my usual charming personality and be a snot!

Come to think of it, it is pretty stupid to call a thread "Herbie Hancock" if it is an announcement of a particular event at a particular time in a particular place.
I think any gigs forum should state a standard protocol for descriptive thread titles.

I agree.
IMHO, though, this CD was good...but not great.
I saw these guys perform last Summer and they were fantastic, so I bought the CD. I was a little let down, to be perfectly honest about it.
That doesn't diminish the quality work of Herbie Hancock, however...or Becker and Hargrove for that matter. Fine artists, all.
