The Paris Jazz Scene
I was sure this thread already existed, but either it doesn't, or else the search function isn't working.
Anyway: May 12 at the New Morning: the Art Ensemble of Chicago, with:
Roscoe Mitchell
Joseph Jarman
Corey Wilkes, trumpet
Reggie Workman
Famoudou Don Moye

Tom - "Jazz in France", I think, was the thread to which you were referring. I will try hard to make it to this, these guys *are* all getting old(er) you know.

Babies willing, I'll also go for this one.
(Tanager on another thread said he'd be in Paris in May. Maybe he'd be interested.)

oooo... Reggie Workman on bass - brilliant idea IMO. Anybody want to sponsor a cultural exchange and buy me a ticket to paris for this show?

So, anyone interested in the Enrico Rava/Gary Peacock gig at Theatre du Chatelet on Friday, the 17th of June? We will be there for the 20.00 set - there's another one at 21.30.
Since my girlfriend is now here and she also enjoys concert-going, we will try to go to a few concerts each month (some classical but I might still mention them here if it doesn't bother anyone) and would like to meet other JC'ers.

Gokhan,
I may attend this one (the programmation & organisation of the Chatelet dates being done by my best friend).
However, I'm mad I won't be able to attend the following week's Stephan Oliva/Joey Baron one (a stupid wedding will have me at the other end of France...).
See you (99% sure) there!

gnhrtg was correct, Tom. You created a thread on this subject a little over two years ago here. There are 49 posts on that one, with some interesting, nostalgic commentary.
My pal Jim Pepper played at New Morning, and made a live recording there with his quartet , featuring Mal Waldron. Great album.

Gokhan -
there's now nothing that can stop me from going to the Peacock/Rava set at 20:00 on Friday (except if a plane crashes on my house tonight ). I think I'll stay for the second one too.

Yes.
And they must be playing together right now in one of their hotel room...
Anyone wants the address to hear the rehearsal?
Mr Peacock arrived yesterday morning and Mr Rava was scheduled this morning, after that they were supposed to rehearse, first at the hotel, then in the Theatre du Chatelet.
Contrary of last year's 4 'group concerts' + solo sets (Taylor (John), Delbecq, Towner, Ducret), this year's Chatelet programmation consists mainly of small duo sets.
Friday is Peacock/Rava and saturday Peacock/Copland. Next week is Stephan Oliva's turn and there's an Oliva/Baron set I will miss (crap!).

Tom - would you not even make any of the, say, Patricia Barber gigs (second half of July), then?
Jaka,
Glad to hear you'll be (t)here. We're definitely coming too but only have tickets for the 20.00 set and though it is possible do not think we will stay for the second set (though depends, perhaps if my girlfriend really enjoys the music we can still try to find tickets there).
So, since it's free seating, we'll try to be there at 19.00, does that sound reasonable? Would you want to meet thereabouts before the concert or will you hang around with your friend?
Also, if you're coming early, be sure to visit Jussieu Jazz (and also the Pop/Rock division - they also carry eai, electronica, modern composition, and the like). They're also having sales on a few Winter & Winter titles at FNAC. I will visit all those places tomorrow so, again, let me know if you have the time and would like to meet.

Gokhan,
I'll be there around 6:45-7PM too, probably not hanging with my friend as he will be too busy working so that everything's perfect for us. I generally see im after the shows.
My usual homebase until 7:15/20 (sufficient, I think, to still find good seats) is the bar that makes the corner at the back of the theatre, 10m from the artists and personel entrance.
You're likely to find me there or inside the theatre ; 2-days beard, (very) short hair and green shirt.
See you tomorrow.

Ok, we'll try to show up at the bar before going it around that time. Hmm...don't know what I will have on but I'm young, look it, and wear glasses.

Andrew Hill, April 8
Any Parisians planning on going to see the Andrew Hill quintet at the New Morning on April 8? I just bought my ticket. No idea if the quintet will be the same musicians who recorded "Time Lines" but I'm hoping it will be. Haven't found the line-up online.
I might also go see Dave Liebman/Steve Swallow/Adam Nussbaum on April 11, also at the New Morning.

Tom, have you been able to find Hill's tour itinerary online anywhere? I don't want to miss him if he comes to Belgium.

Nope. I tried all kinds of combinations with Google and found nothing recent apart from reviews and promotion of "Time Lines."

We'll meet for these two dates, Tom
Tomorrow I'll be at "Le Triton" for AVS's Solo concert and the day after tomorrow in Pantin for his Monk's Casino. And you ?

Nah, I'm broke, and I'm not so big an AVS fan to want to break the piggy bank for him. But definitely for Andrew Hill. I'll PM you sometime soon!

In any case, Raven and I will most likely be at this show. Actually, almost bought some tickets yesterday in FNAC.

I was there yesterday night for this concert Monk's Casino.
Very great indeed. I enjoyed it a lot.
They played very well. The sound was good. They played acoustic. Sometimes they reminded me the Mingus quintet's sound. Maybe because Rudi Mahal is sometimes close to Dolphy with his sound.
At a moment Axel played the piano (Blue Monk) while AVS was playing the trumpet.
They have a lot of humour. At a moment, the drummer was beating the tempo on the stage with a big balloon. And Axel came to the light control and played with it (turning on/off the lights in tempo) while playing the trumpet.

Yes, it was a great fun ! And also, Rudi Mahall, playing his clarinet filled with water, the musicians playing while laying on the ground and other jokes, but it was all but circus music ! there are all great musicians, and the spirit of Monk was there....

There's a nice article in today's LA Times Calendar section about Johnny Griffin and Rick Margitza.

Budgetary constraints prevent me from seeing all I'd like to see of these concerts. I'll see you tomorrow night for Andrew Hill, Grosse Pomme. For May it's a tough choice but I think I'm going to go with Ellery.
