Looking for Hampton Hawes/Cal Tjader/Barney Kessel OJC suggestions

I've recently become acquainted with the Orig. Jazz Classic series, and I must say, after a steady diet of Blue Notes, it's a bit of a nice change. I'm trying to expand my West Coast/Cool collection. I just bought Vols 1-5 of both Lennie Neihaus and Shelly Manne at the Blackhawk. I'm digging them. Now I'd like to look into Hawes, Tjader, and Kessel. Being that they all recorded somewhat prolifically, I'd like to purchase four or five OJC titles by each. Aside from the cd guides and allmusic.com, I'm at a loss. Would love any and all suggestions.

Obliged.

By the way, there's nothing "cool" about the artists you mention.

There's nothing "cool"? That's fine. Under which sub-genres would they then fall under? I know Tjader was into Latin jazz.

Hampton Hawes:
If you don't have the 3 discs titled "All Night Sessions," buy them right away.
All three are great quartet recordings. Folks playing are Hawes (p), Jim Hall (g), Red Mitchell (b), and Bruz Freeman (d). Because I really dig Hampton Hawes, I think you ought to purchase two others, as well: a trio recording titled "I'm All Smiles" (Hawes; Red Mitchell, bass; Donald Bailey, drums), and a quartet recording titled "For Real!" (Hawes; Harold Land, tenor sax; Scott La Faro, bass; Frank Butler, drums)
I have a bunch of Cal Tjader discs, but only two are OJC's.
"Tjader Plays Jazz" There's a quartet w/ Cal on drums; Bob Collins,
trombone; Eddie Duran, guitar; All McKibbon, bass. There's also
a quintet w/ Cal on vibes; Brew Moore, tenor sax; Sonny Clark,
piano; Eugene Wright, bass; Bobby White, drums
"Cal Tjader's Latin Kick" w/ Cal on vibes; Manuel Duran, piano;
Brew Moore, tenor sax; Carlos Duran, bass; Luis Miranda, congas;
Bayardo Velarde, timbales
(See next post.)

Have only one Barney Kessel CD, and it's an OJC. It's wonderful too.
"Kessel Plays Standards" Great tunes, 12 of 'em. Barney Kessel, guitar;
Bob Cooper, tenor sax and oboe; Hampton Hawes and Claude Williamson taking turns on piano; Monty Budwig and Red Mitchell taking turns on bass;
Shelley Manne and Chuck Thompson taking turns on drums. I mean, can you live with that?!!!!!!

Hawes was a pure bop/hard bop pianist, and I think Kessell would be called a bop guitarist with swing leanings. It has been common for years to conflate West Coast and "cool," but there was plenty of West Coast hot. There was, of course, mixing and overlap. Shelly Manne was basically a bop guy, but he was associated with Shorty Rogers who is generally lumped in the West Coast cool school. Chet Baker is thought of as "cool" but Russ Freeman who worked very closely with him was a pure bebop player. Art Pepper is another hot player who was sometimes lumped with cool players because of geography, and his album +11 does have some excellent "Birth of the Cool"-influenced charts by Marty Paich. I highly recommend Ted Gioia's book for a perspective on the west coast scene.

One of the handful of super great live shows I ever heard was one that Hawes, Mitchell, and a drummer I can't recall (hate that!) gigged at a club called "The Haig." I think that's the correct spelling. Don't believe it was "The Hague." Many years ago though--many years ago. Maybe forty years ago. Anyhow, it was great!

Yes, that's the correct spelling. Pollo, do you know the Wardell Gray at the Haig album with Hawes,Art Farmer, Shelly Manne & Joe Mondragon? West Coast bop at its best.

Yes, I have that. I got a bunch of Wardell sides. Until he died (read that "was murdered," I think), I bought all his stuff. I even read that Bill Moody book, "Death of a Tenor Man" just last year. Meanwhile, I have a
nice photograph I shot of Art Farmer in the 'green room' at the Jazz Bakery.
I have a bunch of Art Farmer recordings too!
