R.I.P. Hans Koller

Because of my absence from the net I now had to notice, that Hans Koller austrian saxplayer died last december. He played with such great players like Albert Mangelsdorff, Lee Konitz, Zoot Sims and Stan Kenton. 1958 he played with Benny Goodman and his Band at the world-exhibition at Brüssel. From Kollers Ensembles there came out Joe Zawinul and Attila Zoller.

I mentioned a memorial broadcast I caught a few months back. It caused me to pick up a couple of his discs. He's great: I think fans of Marsh and Konitz would really enjoy his work. And, as you say he's played with some interesting sidemen too. (Kovacs was a really innovative pianist/composer, I think.) I've seen a quote from Zawinul to the effect that Koller was every aspiring European musician's god of cool bop at one time.

Boston Tricky, take notice!!

Sorry to hear this news. Hermann, thanks for passing this on.

Walto - I'd been meaning to pick up some of Koller's music for some time. Can you recommend anything? (And can I find it in town?)

I like "Koller Plays Kovac" on Austrian Jazz Art--but I didn't get it locally. I think I got it from Europe through GEMM. Maybe it's around here now.

I heard some other stuff on the radio I liked even better, but I think it's material that's now out of print. Might be best to check out the used LP bins for recordings with his "all stars."
