Bauer - Kowald - Sommer

"Between Heaven and Earth"

Intakt CD 079

to recapitulate:

The two Ossi greats on Trombone and Drums, and the late great Peter Kowald playing some of the finest bass I've ever heard.

Also includes an interesting and moving essay by Sommer about Kowald.

Some of this is in the vein of the more quieter, meditative improv work you'd expect from that whole Barry Guy/Evan Parker crew of folks. A few other tracks on this disc would qualify as "straight-ahead Jazz" (loosely defined).

I can confidently recommend this to all whose tastes tend towards the experimental.

(just wanted to be the first to post a review, and give this album more well-deserved publicity)

I'm really happy to own not only this but INTAKT CD80 too with Guy-Parker in studio and Parker-Guy in concert, two outstanding bassplayers together with equivalent colleages

The Bauer/Ake Takase duo in Victo is also a fine recording.

This trio made some wonderful music over the years. I had the pleasure of seeing them on two occasions, most recently at the 2000 Vision Festival. I believe that was the final concert (or one of) that Peter did at the end of his car tour of the US.

This new CD is a bit of a departure in that the trio employs shorter pieces as opposed to what I've seen on stage on on the excellent "Three Wheels Four Directions" CD on Victo. But every bit as good, in my opinion.

Dredging this thread up. This recording is superb. Crawjo, Jared, Captain Hate, et. al. if you don't have this yet, don't hesitate.

Kowald will blow your mind here. Bauer and Sommer are excellent too. The interaction among the three is quite extraordinary.

This one is great.

I'd also encourage people to check out "Zentralquartet" as well for a further dose of Bauer and Sommer.
