My New Album Is Shipping!
Folks--
Please lift a glass and celebrate with me: 1,000 copies of Two Days in November, my new trio album, are sitting next to me as I type this.
You can listen to samples (high bitrate mp3s) at www.dougrobinson.com. There are also links to gorgeous photos from the session and, for the technically curious, in-depth discussion about the recording gear we used.
We recorded most of the album live, in my one-room studio with minimal isloation. Thanks to careful mic placement by engineer Dan Richards (and superior mics and preamps provided by Earthworks and Millennium media), the resulting sound is realistic, open and dynamic. I am not an audiophile but the mastering engineer is, and he gave this recording a compliment which even I am too humble to repeat in public. Suffice it to say that he thinks it sounds good too!
Two Days in November is 77-minutes long (13 compositions including 11 originals). The packaging, as you'll see at the site, is quite cool--the cover image is from an original oil painting by Fran Carder, a good friend from my Synanon days. Wait till you see the rest of the 6-panel digipak, which was designed by SF artist Atticus Wolrab.
The release of this new CD coincides with the one year anniversary of the trio (Duncan Moore on drums, Ken Dow on acoustic bass). Most of the work is acoustic, but I laid down a couple of tracks on electric piano (Rhodes or Wurliter), organ and one wild synth solo that might take you--just for a moment--back to the days of Mahavishnu Orchestra.
This is the one, folks. I believe in this album, and I'm putting everything into marketing that I possibly can. If I am persistent and don't run out of money, you will hear it on your local public radio jazz show later this year and see it in the larger dirt-world retailers as well. It will be on Amazon.com and CD Baby within a couple of weeks. But I would love to start by sending some copies out to my friends here at Jazz Corner community. If you're intrigued, please swing by the site, listen to the samples and place yer order like Scott Dolan did, even before I announced it!
Thanks for supporting independent music, you guys. I hope this project will add some a dimension to our coversations about the glorious times we live in, where musicians can release only the art they are truly moved to create, and somehow find their audiences without the help of major label weasels, big bucks marketing tactics or huge musical compromises.
Finally, for those who plan to be in the vicinities of Berkelely, Half Moon Bay. Arroyo Grande, San Jose or Visalia during the first week of June, I'll be posting our record release tour schedule here. Hope to meet some more of you in the flesh.
With love,
Doug 'Jazzooo' Robinson

Doug, were you able to get that DVD-Audio version cut? I would definitely be interested in this, especially on DVD-Audio.

Hi, Kevin--
I do want to offer DVD-A's for an additional charge when someone orders the CD, but I'm still looking for a manufacturer who will do short runs of DVD-A's. not so easy to find! I might just bite the bullet and buy the software to do it myself.
I won't be selling the DVD-A's separately from the CDs--the packaging for the CDs is just too cool. However, until the DVD-A's are ready, if you want both versions just order the CD now from my site. I'm keeping a list of those who want the DVD-A's and once they are ready, I'll ship them out with a second invoice for the balance. How does that sound?

Doug -
This is terrific news.
If this trio record is as good as Sit Jazz Down and Plays Well With Others, it's gonna be a gas!
Congratulations!
...and I agree with JB ...post the good news in Speakout. Your friends will find this welcome news!

I guess I'm just shy ...but looks like Lois and Mone' worked it out for me! Thanks, guys.
Chaz--what can I say? The day when I DON'T think my newest work is better than anything I've ever done is the day I'll probably take up another creative outlet. I have nothing bad to say about those two previous albums (and one other). This one is just *completely* different, that's all. Working in a trio requires a whole different sense of personal commitment from each player--you can't hide for a minute. I've never been so exposed on any of my albums, and it's a great feeling.

Thanks, Tim. We're scouting for cool places to play right now. I've got a friend who is on the board of a nice synagogue with a beautiful theater and grand piano, but then I've also heard good things about the Congregational Church in Tulare. We're not going to play background music at a club, that's for certain. I just need 75 seats or so.
It's on its way, Mike--thanks again!

You might also want to check into either the United Methodist Church or the First Assembly Church; both are on Caldwell Av. and have good acoustics. Each has a grand piano, as well.
The new HS in town has a nice little theater, but I'm not sure about the piano situation.
If you are so inclined, I could be of some service here...

If you hear Mike, you're listening to an mp3 from a different album: Plays Well With Others from 1997.
The mp3 of NY Blues on the new album's webpage is just the piano trio of Duncan moore, Ken Dow and myself.

Egads--Goodspeak is right!
My web designer linked to the wrong version of NY Blues at my site for the new album. In 1997 I recorded the same song with guitarist Mike Stern, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Ben Perowsky. As much as I love it, the new version with just my piano trio is what appears on the new album. I've asked her to change things around but I want to be clear--the new album doesn't feature Mike Stern.
Whew.

Doug, I raised FOUR glasses of wine to you tonight (actually, I was at another seder, but I was thinking of you).
I look forward to checking it out. Make sure stevebop and Eric Jackson get copies for the WGBH jazz shows.

Congratulations, Doug!!!
It sounds like it was fun to do and rewarding, artistically as well. I look forward to hearing it.
BTW, I haven't forgotten that you made a request of me, too long ago. I just keep having crisis after crisis befall me.
I wish you great success with your new "baby".

"Their Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Ha" on the "Liz Barber" cut?"
Damn--the secret is out.
Maybe it will help sales...
Thanks, guys--and mjb I will let you know as soon as the DVD-A is available. Tim, let me follow up on my Visalia leads for another couple of days--if I don't like what I come up with, I might ask you to put me in contact with the right people at these other places, thanks. I don't know churches in town at all--the one in Tulare is a lead from a friend and apparently they have thrown some nice concerts there.

It is now.
The first JC orders have gone out--thank you for a decent opening weekend! I hope you dig it.
I've still got a few more right here...

Congratulations!
Well, I wanted to find a place to say "thank you" for the welcoming message and this seems like the spot to do that because I can also congratulate you on the new project!
There is a new service out there that might help on the sales side too. I don't want anyone to think I am "advertising" (because I'm not... I just think it is a cool deal) or anything so I will send you a personal note. I hope that this is an appropriate way to handle this part.
(If anyone else is interested just holler... it isn't a secret I have no desire to take (or to have any one think I am trying to) the spotlight from this fantastic accomplishment)
I would LOVE to hear it and I am so excited I found this place in time to be here for this! There is always a triumph in a finished product and even more in actual sales. I hope that both are joys that you will see from this one. As you said.. "This is the One!" . Please let us know how we might help! I can't be the only one here that would love to (help that is)
Best of all wishes,
Nissa
(who realizes that just about everything she says is followed by a disclaimer. Once I have been here for a couple of weeks I will stop feeling the need to not be controversial, promise)

You won't have to wait very long, Michael! Did I mention tyat I even have a guitar solo on one tune? It's at a slow, dreamy tempo so I really get to show off my chop (please note the singular).
Nissa--thanks for the tip. I checked it out and might do it eventually.
