Music is the cup that holds the wine of silence. - Robert Fripp
Music is the space between the notes. - Debussy (I think)
I believe, actually, that silence is impossible, but I greatly value quietude.

Not exactly sure what the context of this poll is, but...
For me, the clearest sign of cultural decline is the fact that seemingly not a single moviegoer (other than those with me and myself) has the capacity or the willingness to shut the fuck up for two hours.

That was a nice chart by Thad Jones.
And then there's the Silence of the Lambs.

Have you heard that album, Goody? Enrico Pieranunzi is one of my very favorite pianists, and I'm aware of him thanks to my friend Sand.

I love that tune "Silence" - but I have only heard it played by the Geoff Simkins quartet - they do a fantastic live version of it, which I've heard several times and it is on this CD :

I wish I could hear it again, silence. After a decade of tinnitus, the closest I can get is quiet. Not the same thing. I'm always hearing at least my own ears.
Music is silence interrupted by sound. (Sisco)

Silence was the name of Ian Hunter's pre-Mott the Hoople band.
Silence is a track by Canadian prog-power trio, FM.
Silence is Golden.

Be of good cheer
It's all in His plan
He's walking with us
And He speaks through every man
But I have this notion
Call it my fear
That I will die alone
And even He won't be there
But when I feel that way
I thirst, and I want to shout it
But trust me Lord, to be quiet about it
Yes, I am lost
But He is leading me home
And He's my companion
When my friends have up and gone
But still I get lonely
And sometimes I doubt
I want to do right
But it seems like only wrong gets out
But when I feel that way
I thirst, and I want to shout
But trust me Lord, to be quiet about it
Oh quiet about it
Yeah, I'll be quiet about it

i really like these polls than come more often than not at all. keeps you on your feet.
what i object to is the damned TV. who ever invented is a compete idiot.
sure you'll say, why get it, if you don't like it. easier said than done. i like my programs but it seems to make you an addict like a certain drug. well...........
this is where i believe that the silence of the senses of your body comes in.
if a person can't be quiet for more than 15 minutes, you have got a real problem. i am one of the millions who fits this discription.
still can drag my pictures in here, but i do have a very old one from Germany
from grandma of albert einstein with both of his ears closed with his hands.
silence is the handmade of the lord is what he said why the picture was taken. now if someone could of taken that pipe out of his mouth. another nasty habit.

I remember hearing the conductor of a performance of John Cage's 4" 33 of silence, talking about this. So he said how every perfromance was different, as people weren't used to sitting in silence and just listening to themselves and ambient noise around......
I love going to concerts in the big London Concert halls and the silence is an integral part of this, that you don't get anywhere else in life nowadays.
Unfortunately not even there - so at my highlight of the last Proms season at the Albert Hall - Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic :
It's the opening of the Rite of Spring and the quiet bassoon solos emerges out of the silence to begin the evocation of nature - but then a mobile phone chime rings out across the whole hall, louder than the music!!
Fortunately, the conductor and performers were confident enough to stop and start again - but to me it is indicative of the fact that silence is being eradicated from daily life...

No jackhammers where I live, Bruce. Thank goodness. The most people noise I hear when I walk outside is auto tires on the pavement, 3/10 of a mile from the house, and the occasional airplane (or pot-searching helicopter, in appropriate seasons). That's about it. I get a lot of quiet, if no silence.
I'm one of the people (and so's my partner) who can be quiet for hours on end, even when in the same room. And there was a time when I worked on the economy and took vacations, that I'd sometimes go for days and even weeks without talking apart from ordering from a menu or what have you. The ceaseless chatter about nothing business is something I can't deal with, and don't.
I'm with F on the tv, too. No other single thing has rendered people dumber, ever. My father used to turn the thing on first thing when he woke in the a.m. and turn it off last thing before going to bed at night, and in between it would be going continuously, whether or not someone was watching it. Things like that drive me mad. Ditto with people who keep a radio mindlessly tuned all day when nobody's really paying any attention to it -- especially but not only if it's NPR, the mere sound of which is enough to make me scream, never mind the continuous repetition of the same news headlines and weather reports all day long. I can't take shit like that, and commercials are something I've entirely wiped from my life. Last night, while waiting for a sandwich and beer after work at a local diner, I saw Dan Rather for the first time since the last Gulf War. Man, I haven't missed much, I'll tell you what. "News" stories of the utmost import being "covered" in five or six seconds -- about the length of time the average American can pay attention to any one thing, apparently -- and the man himself, who looked as though he'd given himself a haircut just before going on camera.
They can have it. I can't believe people are paying huge sums every month for cable or satellite. To me, it's the equivalent of just throwing the bread out of a car window on the way to the dump.

You should see the huge sums of money I'm paying out just to keep my credential.
$1400 bucks for Bush's educational reform hobby horse.
No shit.

I fall in the first group of silence with balanced activity.Sounds is cool noise is whats jacked up!I can sit and be quite for long periods of time.I got chillin down but its rare when I 'm in total silence.I'll have the box jammin or the tube on even if I'm reading. If I try to sit in complete silence my mind wonders to much but if I have a little somthing on I just go from what I'm concentrating on to the sound and back.Sort of like having blinders on .Can you dig it?TV well it's pretty bad but I'm a sports and news junkie got to watch the game. Also having a five year old in the house put a serious premium on silence. Her mouth runs from the time she wakes up until she goes to bed.Peeps told me you spend the first 2 years of your kids life trying to get them to walk and talk and the next 16 trying to get them to sit down and shut up.Peace and all that.
