Helio Alves: Piano
Santi Debriano: Bass
Matt Wilson: Drums

Helio Alves is one of the most exciting and in-demand Brazillian Jazz pianists in the New York jazz scene. As a sideman he has toured and recorded with the likes of the late great tenor sax player Joe Henderson, Airto and Flora Purim, Paquito D’Rivera, and more recently can be heard on Yo-Yo Ma’s 2003 Grammy award-winning "Obrigado Brazil."

On his new CD, "Portrait in Black and White" Alves demonstrates he is equally comfortable playing straight-ahead jazz. Accompanied by Matt Wilson, who has emerged as one of the most versatile drummers around, along with the gifted bassist Santi Debriano, Alves proves he is a force to be reckoned with in his interpretation of both standards and original compositions. Expect to hear compelling renditions of "Angel Eyes," the Jobim classic "Portrait of Black and White," as well as original tunes that will appeal to both bossa nova and jazz lovers alike.

Helio Alves will be interviewed on WBGO on Monday 19 at 9pm.

helio Alves started playing piano at the age of six in his native Sao Paulo, Brazil. After training classically as a child, Helio segued into jazz and in 1985 enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1994 Helio moved to New York City and soon started working with Claudio Roditi’s group, Paquito D’Rivera, Slide Hampton, Dave Samuels, Andy Narell, Mike Stern, Oscar Castro Neves, Paul Winter, David Sanchez, Harry Allen, The New York Voices, Gato Barbieri, Santi Debriano, Hendrik Meurkens, Yo-Yo Ma, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim to name a few. From 1995 to 1997 Helio toured extensively with the Joe Henderson Quartet, playing major jazz festivals around the world.

Helio is currently featured in the Grammy Award winning CDs "Joe Henderson’s Big Band", "Obrigado Brazil" by Yo-Yo Ma and "Brazilian Dreams" by Paquito D’Rivera. Helio is also featured on "Samba Manhattan Style" and "Double Standards" by Claudio Roditi on Reservoir Music, Slide Plays Jobim" by Slide Hampton,"October Colors" and "In a Sentimental Mood" by Hendrik Meurkens on Concord Records, "Circlechant" and "Artistic License" by Santi Debriano on High Note Records and Grammy Award nominee "Samba Jazz Fantasia" by Duduka da Fonseca on Malandro Records, among others.

Helio’s first solo recording "Trios" was released on Reservoir Music and it features the talents of John Patitucci and Nilson Matta on bass, Al Foster, Duduka Da Fonseca and Paulo Braga on drums. His second solo recording, "Portrait in Black and White", was released on Reservoir Music in February of 2004 and it features Santi Debriano on bass and Matt Wilson on drums.
