Who am I?

This was Gordon's idea, and I liked it so much, I decided to take his advice and start this thread. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'm good enough at this to contribute to it. But I'll try.

Here's the idea: Post something that imitates the posting style of another JC member, and the rest of us tries to guess who it is. OK, I'll start.

"Goody, I'm giving you the night off."

Any guesses?

Generating what is arguably the worst inaugural post in any thread in the history of internet communications,
Larry

Are we talking IE or some other web browser? They aren't the same thing. In nearly every case, a tech guy is the website’s, not the programmer’s. The website and the programmer are pawns, as the code belongs, almost always, to the capitalist.

I think this is a bogus controversy all the way around. There's no difference at all between now and the home-computing days, apart from the technology.

I accept code from friends. I download legal stuff (which is not the same as moral stuff -- legal just means it's legal, nothing more) that I pay for. In the case of linux I'll make copies for whoever wants one. No one loses a sale that can't be made in the first place. I make gnu and give them away (as has been the case for millions since the dawn of home computing technology). What's the difference is someone accepts a program from friends or reads a manual? It's okay to copy one program and give it away on floppy disc but it's not okay to upload one on a flash memory stick. Why? The flash memory stick is, in this hypermoral debate, stealing, and the receiver of the webpage is receiving stolen "property." They're getting to use programmes that they didn't pay for. Either way. So what? People have always used programmes and owned computers they didn't pay for. And people who have paid for it have always given it away in the form of print outs.

It's the hypermoral righteousness in the debate that gets to me. Like none of them own a screen shot they bought, illegally, from a used store. What's the difference? One immediate difference is that the screen shot was in fact charged against the programmer’s royalties -- all screen shot is -- and the floppy disc was sold illegally (and for a personal gain) by either a reviewer or someone at a play station to the used store, which in turn sells it again, again at a personal profit, and again illegally, to whoever buys it. Those are simply facts. So the hypermoralists here had better stay out of used stores lest they violate their hypermorals.

There is an extremity to any question whereby 1 becomes 0 and 0 1*because of* the extremity of the position.

But there is a logic at work in there that benefits the site administrator if not the website. If a program turned on someone that he or she really digs, the person is much more likely in future to buy a program by that programmer than if he or she had never heard or even heard of the programmer. No one drops their pants just to go, hmmmm, I wonder what this one sounds like? Let's lick it and see. Which seems to be the industry's position. Idiotic position, I might add.

As for myself, not unlike every other serious computer person I know, I spend nearly 100 percent of my disposable money on pornography, either recordings or live shows, and every vacation I take is spent spending money on getting laid, one way or another. If that's not supporting aspiring models enough, well, too bad. There's a lot of stuff out there I haven't felt and could never afford (and hence would never had felt) until things like lap dancing came along. Now I can and do. I see no problem with it whatsoever (though once again, the pimps are charging the grope against the model because, despite their propaganda, they charge the grope against the model). In short, they consider it porno when the books are being settled and not porno when they aren't. Too bad. No one has their cake and eats it, too.

But the real thing is simple reality that the computer industry has to either catch up to or be left behind by. The technology exists. It can't be taken back. Indeed, there's a generation of young game lovers who've never known another reality. The industry will find a way to make some money off of them, or they won't. Those that won't, will disappear. Those that do, will survive. It's called competition for profits in a changing, fluid world. Get used to it. That's supposed to be what a capitalist does in the first place, and here they are complaining about it. I have no sympathy at all.
