Stevethelil quit his job

And I accidently deleted his thread. Sorry, Steve.

Here's what happened. The server froze, we had to reboot, the server clock came up two hours off and a couple of Scott's posts appeared out of sequence. I was going to remove them and offer the requisite explanation, but removing the first post kills the thread. Oops.

So my apologies, folks. Administrator error. Hardly ever happens. Once in a blue moon, maybe. Honest. :-)

Eh, no-one really cared anyway; we were just sucking up to (thelil) so we'd get to sit next to his gorgeous wife the next time they were in town.

I've been planning this for awhile, but this morning my boss weaseled on me and I decided this is the right moment to give notice. Basically, I was out sick yesterday and my boss discovered that i did something that appeared to violate agency policy (procedurally only, what I did had no effect on anyone or anything and couldn't have been of less significance). Anyway, fearing that since there was a 1 in 1000 chance that his boss would find out before talking to me about it, and therefore might blame him, he decided to head me off at the pass and tell on me.

So, since I was just waiting for the right moment to give formal notice, I decided the moment had come.

I submitted a letter. This is some of it. Portions (including whole paragraphs) that might give away where I work have been deleted.

Re: resignation

Dear Mr. __________

After almost 25 rewarding, challenging and memorable years working in the ____________________________, I have reached a point in my life where I wish to move on to other things. Accordingly, please consider this letter to be formal notice of my intention to resign effective June 30, 2004.

Nonetheless, I have always felt that I would like to do other things in my life besides practicing law and besides working in an organization, and it seems like my upcoming 25-year anniversary is an appropriate landmark for making a life-changing move. I believe I still have enough energy and time left to start anew, but I don’t know how long I will feel this way.

My wife and I plan on moving to New York City, something we have long wanted to do. She will keep her position as Deputy Commissioner for ______________ and I will dabble in a few areas I have always wanted to become more involved in, such as record dealing, writing and internet-related projects.

In the interest of honesty, I note there have been aspects of my change in role and responsibilities ___________that have been frustrating. I would be happy to share my thoughts on this subject with you at your convenience, if you believe it will be of any value. However, I recognize, in this regard, that I am simply not someone who can feel truly fulfilled working in a large organization, and that my ambivalent feelings probably say more about my psychological makeup than they say about the organization.

In closing, I can’t emphasize enough that I will be leaving here with the warmest of personal feelings for those I have worked with at OBD, and with best wishes for everyone.

Very truly yours

Congratulations on doing this!

I only had the pleasure of quitting once and it was one of the best moments that I have had. It didn't hurt that my boss was a real shithead and I took great satisfaction in seeing his chin drop when I told him I was moving across town to the competition. Best move I ever made.

Well done & congratulations Steve.

I did something similar in 1992 after 22 years with a major national law firm. I must say that my letter was neither as warm nor informative as yours.

I have not regretted the decision for a second - some days but no seconds.

Dabble long and prosper.

So after being friends for 35 years, this is how I find out about a major change in your life, I see it on the internet. Just for that you and Jan have to put me up in your new digs in NYC whenever I want.
This is almost as bad as when I was eleven and my parents left me a note telling me they went on vacation without me.
But anyway congratualtions, I am very jealous.

Well, having quit my job on March 30, I should say "congratulations and welcome to the club."

But I'm a little troubled at the thought of steve(thelil) having so much time on his hands--in addition to so much ass. (Shiver).

Steve(thelil),

I have to tell you that your stock just shot up 100 points in my estimation!

I am mightily impressed that you had the moral integrity and intesinal fortitude to tell your boss to stuff it. Change is good, my friend. And as an individual who is making a job change in his own world, I can speak from experience: It is plenty scary and exhillerating...and all at the same time.

I, for one, completely applaud your resignation and further applaud the guts and foresight it took to go through with it.

BRAVO, my friend, bravo!

Hey, Steve, instead of NYC, why not join Dr. Dave down South in Cary, SC? You and him could start a Jazz record shop/law office just like Ed Stevens on TV... well, he had a bowling alley/law office but it's close!

That would be "you and he" but, hey...the sentiment is still the same, right?

to the tune of Leaving on a Jet Plane

My valise is packed I'm ready to go.
it's time to find a life outside the law
I want to see the bosses'face as I say Goodbye

I came in to today in the early morn
and found that someone ratted, the little worm
and I''ll no longer play the Corporate whore

CHORUS
So sue me and swear for me
understand this less than legal plea
Tort-ure me and hold on to all that dough
'cause I'm leaving this corporate plane
not plannin'to ever come back again
you know I really want to go!

so you know i understand obiter dictum
and i'll no longer act for the victim
I just want to sing like Frank and swing

my intent is clear I will tell you
it's open disclosure and I'm on view
and I wont even make a joke about Mens Rea

CHORUS

I'm not sad to leave this legal caper
no more briefs of evidence and legal papers
You wont know how much i've taken from the Stores

I've lifted a gross of pens and a lap top computer
acted like some visigoth looter
but it's what I desewrve putting up with all you bores!

CHORUS

CHEERS THELIL ...hope things work out Mate

Alright, Steve! Fuck 'em has always been my motto.

I quit my ten-year tour running the homeless shelter under kind of similar circumstances. My boss (who had her job in the first place only because of the huge push I organized for her among the staff when her predecessor left) started giving me all kinds of niggling crap and the organization was becoming larger and more bureaucratic by the day (every time they added someone with an "MSW" -- big fucking deal -- all the person did was create more bureaucracy and more bullshit, but produced no work of note that anyone could see).

Finally, she insisted that I had to be available for an absolutely useless weekly meeting that happened on what had been a day off for me for ten years. I told her if she was really going to insist on this, I'd have no choice but to walk. She said, "Don't even start throwing that shit in my face." So, I replied, fine. Run your own shelter, for a change. I'm outta here.

I never looked back and haven't regretted it once. Fuck 'em.

PS -- How's your georgeous, beautiful, charming Deputy Commissioner? I haven't had the absolutely stunning pleasure of seeing her in several years, now. And of course that's always a lot more fun than seeing you. :-)

Thanks all for the kind thoughts, and of course, more importantly, the attention I so desparately crave.

In a reversal, I posted yesterday FROM WORK (fuck em, as Gary's mantra would say) but was unable to when I got home. A power poll blew down near my house and I lost cable/internet access. So I was wondering if the Godster (not the Goodster, but they know some of the same people) was giving me an omen that I made a mistake.

But then A-Rod homered so I knew all was well.

Please continue the attention, if you wanna, even though I revel in it.

PS. Larry is so damned funny. I always mean to mention it and never do, so I am now,

Always ready to shamelessly steal others' signature bits,

-thelil

I think he worked in the Commission Of Offices For Offices, if I remember right. In Binghamton. Now he wants to move to New York. Right.

But, hey, at least there'll be another couch opening up for the JC jazz tourists in NYC. Not to mention enjoying the magnificent company of his incredibly attractive better half.

I forgot to delete the reference to OBD (the acronym for where I work) in my original post. I hope nobody knows what it stands for. It might be Obsessive Bureaucratic Disorder.

PS. Thanks Ron, wink, wink.

Wow! That's betrayal. Damn those 'rents and their separate lives...did we ask to be born???? Answer: HELL NO!

Keep on keepin' on, thelil. Don't worry about the godster...he can be capricious but he doesn't really mean anything by it.
