Sarin found in Iraq

Reuters is reporting that the Army has found a "small amount" of the nerve agent sarin in an exploded shell in Iraq.

Could our Prime Minister have been right after all?

WMD threat: PM

SADDAM'S MISSING WEAPONS IN TERRORISTS' HANDS: MARTIN

By STEPHANIE RUBEC, OTTAWA BUREAU, SUN MEDIA

Prime Minister Paul Martin says he believes Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and they've fallen into terrorists' hands. Martin said the threat of terrorism is even greater now than it was following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, because terrorists have acquired nuclear, chemical and biological weapons from the toppled Iraqi leader.

"The fact is that there is now, we know well, a proliferation of nuclear weapons, and that many weapons that Saddam Hussein had, we don't know where they are," Martin told a crowd of about 700 university researchers and business leaders in Montreal. "That means terrorists have access to all of that."

'NOT OUT OF IT YET'

The PM's comments run counter to opinions expressed by leaders in such countries as France and Germany who have accused the U.S. and Britain of fudging evidence of WMDs to justify the war against Iraq.

When asked to assess the threat level since Saddam was captured by U.S. troops, Martin said he believes it has increased.

"I believe that terrorism will be, for our generation, what the Cold War was to generations that preceded us," he said. "I don't think we're out of it yet."

Martin disagreed with former prime minister Jean Chretien, who publicly blamed poverty for terrorism and the Sept. 11 attacks. "The cause of terrorism is not poverty, it is hatred."

He said he'll lead the charge to convince countries to join forces to combat terrorism and make sure the Third World has the tools to stamp it out.

Martin said he's lobbying the international community to set up an informal organization to tackle world issues such as terrorism.

GETS NOD FROM BUSH

He said he got the nod from U.S. President George Bush during his visit last month to Washington, D.C., and will take his idea to the European Union and Latin America next.

From the story, it appears that the people who set the device probably didn't even know there was sarin in it. They were trying to use it as a conventional roadside bomb.

I hope this proves either untrue or an anomaly of sorts ..

( i.e. weapons identification malfunction )

I can just see the DUBBya Wehrmacht juping in the air gleefully shouting :

" See..see ..?? WMD!! ..we tolja so !! we tolja so!!..See..see ..?? WMD!! ..we tolja so !! we tolja so!" See..see ..?? WMD!! ..we tolja so !! we tolja so!!.." See..see ..?? WMD!! ..we tolja so !! we tolja so!!.." See..see ..?? WMD!! ..we tolja so !! we tolja so!!.." See..see ..?? WMD!! ..we tolja so !! we tolja so!!..

If this turns out to be true, what's the over/under on how many posts it takes before someone argues that Bush planted the WMD evidence to give himself political cover?

According to one of the UN inspectors, David Kay, it is probably one of a few that were unaccounted for from the first Persian Gulf war.

Not a big find, supposedly.

obviously a weapon on non destruction since it didn't do any damage. an unmarked artillery shell.

BTW, whose decision was it to not disarm the miliary when they sent them home after the "war" ended?

Funny how Kays mind changes with the wind, yet so many people quote him as though he were a credible source.

They are saying that it is an old leftover from the previous war. Anyway, when asked how many it could have killed, the answer was "about twelve." Hardly a weapon of mass destruction!

This is an obvious trick by the Bushies.

Not by itself, of course. The question is really whether it is just an "anomaly" or if there are many more like it that have been stockpiled in some unknown place.

I never thought the WMD thing was the best reason to go to war, because I was worried that an invasion would just cause whatever weapons that existed to scatter...which may have been what happened.

We have become very cynical about this.

With good reason.

If I were one of the dozen dead guys, I'd consider it "massive" enough.

Even if there are more like it, the chemicals used to "produce" Sarin and most other chemical weapons only are viable or effective for approx. 15 - 20 years. I forget the exact explanation, but basically the shit don't work after approx 20 yrs...maybe others who have more time or know more specifics about this could elaborate..?
