Unlike every one of the players already listed here, you're half a chance of seeing one of these cats live at a venue near you. Plus there's a great bonus: They're all fucking great players in their own way. Or are we talking cultural cringe here?

I don't know that list, but I doubt there's more of a chance I'd see Julius Hemphill, Johnny Hodges, or Art Pepper (to name a few) than them.

At least I hope not!!

How about

James Spaulding. A dextrous, surprising, fiery player. I like The Smile Of The Snake on High Note, and Songs of Courage on Muse. But I was first hipped to him through his 60's work with Freddie Hubbard (Breaking Point, Hub-Tones), Duke Pearson (Wahoo), and Bobby Hutcherson (Components, Patterns). And he's an excellent flute player too.

And Ira Sullivan plays great alto. His duet with Joe Diorio The Breeze And I is excellent (though not all alto.) It contains my favorite take on The Summer Knows.

I'll second Dick Trickle suggesting Lee Konitz's Motion.

Art Pepper's live Galaxy recordings. Some very urgent playing.
