Angry AHH....blew them out again

.....So I was listening to a CD the other night and I heard a little rattle, I go turn the CD player up a little bit and it turns out I've blown out another pair of speakers. @#$#@$@ .

I plug a pair of CREATIVE (I figured I would buy a name-brand speaker after I blew out my last ones) computer speakers into a portable CD player. I don't play it particularly loud, but for some reason after a year, maybe a year and a half my speakers keep blowing out. Is there a better alternative? or a better brand? .....I always get the computer speakers with the woofer, so that I can have full control of the bass, (as opposed to book shelf speakers).

I would like not to spend money on a pre-amp. Any suggestions?

Sorry, I don't have any technical advice, but I thought I'd commiserate anyway.

Damn, I've had the same crappy speakers for 15 years and have yet to blow them out. What am I doing wrong?

I so badly want to replace them too, but what I get from the spouse is "we have better things to spend our money on. Anyway, those still sound fine to me, so why repalce them at all?" Send me your secret 52nd St.....

9 out of 10 times, speakers are blown because they are being under driven.

This wouldn't make sense in your case since the amplifier being used was designed specifically for this system.

I have a cheap Altec Lansing 3 piece set connected to a portable cd player in my living room. Used it for years with no problems.

I have a 3 piece Klipsch set up on my computer. No problems there either.

I'd say you likely just have a garbage set. Probably something wrong with the amp itself.

Al,

My advice: Put on "Tonight's The Night" and crank the volume up. If the abysmal sh**storm of offputting noise doesn't destroy them, then the violent rage building up inside you and the ensuing acts of demolition you'll soon begin to engage in will probably do the trick. Just keep a baseball bat handy so you have a handy tool of destruction at your disposal when you "black out" with hate and fury.

Biased but pretty sure this will work for almost anyone with at least one functioning ear,
Larry

That condition exists when the amplifier doesn't have enough power to drive the speakers properly. An underpowered speaker is subject to clipping. Don't ask me for an explanation of clipping or I'll have to charge you. I'll let Mo Noyz take it from there.................
