Best Comper.

Who your favorite or in your opinion the best comper.
Hate to do it, but limit your post to one guy or gal, 'cause after a certain point, you're just listing all your favorite piano/guitar players.

I gotta go with Calvin Keys. His comping makes the music absolutley swiiiing, and his presence is great, but not obtrusive.

Close call! I was going to say...Sonny Cla....But OK, by the rules ! - Bobby Hutcherson behind Jackie Mclean - "One Step Beyond" etc. Not sure if it's strictly "comping" but...a dream.

Herbie Hancock, at least in the classic soulful hard bop division. Just listen to "Cornbread," "Watermelon Man," etc., etc. Sure, I think of Horace Silver, but I'm still going to nominate Herbie.

Horace Silver springs to mind first, so I'll go with him.

My vote goes to Herbie Hancock from the early 60's up to and including Miles' quintet.

Actually I don't know. I just picked Harrah's because it was the first casino to come to mind.

Best? I don't know. I have always really loved early Horace Silver though... that manic level of energy.
