Free Jazz History Program in Boston
Eric Jackson To Offer Boston Jazz History Program
Boston Music Pioneers Join Panel … Early Roots To Present Day Covered
________________________________________________________________________________________
17 April – Boston MA – The Equinox Music Festival announced today that their Equinox Educational Outreach Program (EEOP), along with Institutional Sponsor, The Boston Public Library, will present Tradin’ 4’s with Eric Jackson – A History of Boston Jazz on consecutive Saturdays in May. The program, with special invited guests – a panel of Boston music pioneers, is free to the general public.
"The Boston Public Library is honored to host some of the jazz greats of Boston during the Equinox Music Festival," said Diane Ota, head of the BPL's Music Department. "This event will be like an oral history in the making and fits so well with the BPL's mission to document musical life in Boston."
Jackson, the long-time dean of the jazz airwaves on WGBH Radio’s Jazz with Eric in the Evening program, will lead a panel of distinguished guests, all part of the deep, rich history of Boston’s jazz community.
Guests include Al Vega, Herb Pomeroy, Fred Taylor, Vincent Haynes, Carl Atkins and Mel Levine. Dr. Leonard Brown and William Lowe, Northeastern University Professors of African American Studies and Music, and co-founders of the Equinox Music Festival will serve as hosts of this event.
Tradin’ 4’s with Eric Jackson will take place on Saturday, May 17th, 2:30-5:00PM and on Saturday, May 24th from 2:00-5:00PM at the Rabb Lecture Hall in the Boston Public Library’s main Copley Square branch. Admission is free to the public and seating is unreserved.

Man, would I love to be present for this event. Among other things, I'd like to hug Herb Pomeroy, my Jazz History professor at Berklee some 40+ years ago. Sounds like a wonderful occasion, inspired by Eric Jackson. Keep the tradition alive in Boston... and everywhere!

Of course, as with any event that Eric Jackson participates in , the notion that it will cover Boston jazz "... to the present" is a total joke. Jackson is completely clueless when it comes to any music of note after about 1965. If one were really interested in a panel that would cover what was going on now in the Boston jazz scene, why not include:
- Charlie Kohlhase
- Nate McBride
- Jim Hobbs
- Joe Maneri
- Dominique Eade
- Pandelis Karayorgis
For a reasonable history, where is:
- Mark Harvey
- John Voigt

I had Herbie for jazz history and line writing 'bout 38 years ago.
What a guy!
Anyhow, it seems odd that Charlie Mariano is not included. I haven't heard of his passing, or if he's ill.[?]

I'm happy to say that Charlie is alive, well, playing, recording and living in Europe.

That is certainly uplifting news! The man's like the energizing bunny, in more ways than one. He is one inspiring and inspired individual. I first heard him live w/Toshico(sp) back in the late '50s down here in NC, then with Kenton(on tenor, at Fort Bragg), then later at the Jazz Workshop in Boston, knew him at Berklee....
It's a "shame" he won't be around for the jazz history show.

Mariano recently recorded with John Tchicai on Vitold Rek's date, THE POLISH JAZZ EXPLOSION. They may tour Poland in Fall.

Charlie Mariano is indeed alive and well. he has a brand new recording out on Justin Time/ENJA called Deep in A Dream. Recorded in November 2001 in The Netherlands with Bob Degan, piano; Isla Eckinger, bass and Jarrod Cagwin, drums.
Charlie sounds totally inspired playing tunes like:
You Better Go Now
Spring Is Here
I'm A Fool to Want You
The Touch of Your Lips
Deep in A Dream
and others
