Otiel and the Peacemakers-Family Secret

Otiel Burbridge is my new hero. I endlessly search for new sounds. My first real heros were Return to Forever, since then it has been what has seemed like an endless search for something that genious, daring, and completely gifted. The kind of musicians that almost make you give up after watching them in concert. Like say Victor Wooten is nowadays, or how Stanley Jordan was in the 80's or better yet Flora Purim was in the 70's. Good music or gifted music is hard to come by, music that treads new ground. Especially today with all this electronic sampling bull. "The Family Secret" album is awesome..thats all I can say. To see them in concert is nirvana for two hours or so..never a dull moment ..no time to drift or notice the girl with a nice ass walking by..my bass teacher who tours with Wooten hipped his students to Oteil when they came through V.A. You can't buy this on towerrecords.com. You have to go to the website. If anybody knows what I'm talking about..give a shout out. JH07

Everything!!! Almost

I've played keyboards for 31 years and there are things that I still cannot do.
The thrill of accomplishing anything in this world comes from the time it takes to accomplish it..not the end result. In other words..Earning your rewards is better for you as a musician than stealing them. In the end you have'nt really learned or bettered yourself as a musician by sampling..to me thats hurting yourself..if you could not sample what would you do..learn it..and through learning it..you would eventually add your personal touch to whatever phrase you learned. Thats the beauty of playing something yourself..no one else could play it like you..if you work on your way of doing it. Sampling robs you of he chance to do it your way. In my opinion. You take the easy road..it's a cop out. It's like going to buy a M.D. degree instead of going to med school and becoming a doctor. It's to bad that the respect musicians once had has been fucked by non-talented, raiders of the lost arc, fake, people. Hey if your going to sample..you might as well try a hand at becoming a d.j. and leave the creative part to life long musicians who hve practiced and practiced and practiced to play tha tone thing you want to claim for yourself jsut because you happened to like what you hear.
Please i can't say anymore..but I am biased towards sampling..long live live music!!!!!!!Acoustically played live music.

Oteil also plays bass for the current edition of the Allman Brothers Band, including their excellent CD "One Way Out."

Nice rant!! As a musician I feel the same way. But there is one caveat. Using computers as musical instruments opens at least the possibilty for creating new creative music on a level equal to acoustically played live music. Have I personally heard any such music, well....no, I've not. In fact, for me, not even close. BUT, I would not be so quick to discount the possibilty that somebody may spend 31 years perfecting their sampling, editing and sonic manipulation techniques to the degree that such practice indeeds rises to the highest of artistic levels. Someone's going to do it eventually.
