Eliane Elias - Dreamer

Eliane Elias has a new CD on Bluebird, and I think it's the best she's done in a while.
Very Brazillian, bossa nova type stuff. She does "Call me", "BAubles, Bangles, and Beads", "Fotografa", and more. She sings and plays piano with Mark Johnson on bass, Paulo Braga on drums, Oscar Castro Neves on guitar. Michael Brecker plays on a track.
I am really impressed with the CD, I love Brazillian music and this is the first thing like this in a long time that I have responded to.
I will post more after more listening....

I love her playing, don't love her singing. I think I'll miss this.

This is some pretty soporific stuff.

It's incredible how, on the first nine English language tracks, everything sounds completely dispensable - sophisticated pop, perhaps, but totally unengaged and unengaging; drowning in treacle on "Movin' Me On" - but all it takes is 3 minutes of "Doralice" in Portuguese (especially the guitar & voice first chorus) for Elias to come alive and sound mischievous. Too bad the same can't be said for the album's other 50 minutes.

I only enjoy her singing in small doses, so this was not one of Eliane's that I liked a lot.

In fact it didn't come off very well as far as I was concerned in concert either, actually far worse. It was like witnessing a fantastic jazz talent performing one 'canned' tune after another. Couldn't stay for an entire set....that bad IMO.
