David Murray - Gwotet

I've been listening to the new David Murray album over the past couple of days. This disc, entitled Gwotet, continues his exploration of ethnic and island music that he started when he joined the Justin Time label several years ago. The music is very rhythmic with a lot of drums and percussion and some very funky bass at times. Murray takes some excellent solos, as does special guest Pharoah Sanders.

Anybody else check this out yet?

Gwotet on Tour

I liked Gwotet, as well. There are a _lot_ of musical traditions evoked, but it seems to hang together.

Looks like a subset the group on the record is doing a U.S. tour: they'll be at the Clef Club in Philadelphia next Wed, 7/23.

David Murray, sax & bass clarinet; Hugh Ragin, trumpet; Harve Samb, guitar;
Jarlbu Shahid, doublebass; Hamid Drake, drums, and
Klod Kiavue & Frangois Ladrezru, ka-drums & vocals

I gave it an initial listen and mostly paid attention to the grooves, which were appealing. Still need to give it a more attentive listen where I can focus a bit more.
