Ottawa Jazz Festival, June 24-July 4
Ottawa, Canada heats up big time in the summer, and this year's Ottawa International Jazz Festival is shaping up to be their hottest line-up yet.
With ticketed shows taking place at the beautiful outdoor Confederation Park, as well as indoors at the National Library of Canada and the National Arts Centre Studio, there is something for all tastes. Some of the over seventy artists performing at this year's festival are: The Herbie Hancock Quartet, with Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Brian Blade; The Fred Hersch Trio; Roswell Rudd's MALIcool; Larry Coryell Trio; The Latin Jazz All-Stars; Jean Beaudet Trio; Marilyn Crispell in duet with Ottawa bassist John Geggie; William Parker, Ken Peplowksi; Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kenny Garrett; Béla Fleck and the Flecktones; Marian McPartland, Richard Bona; The Bad Plus; Sweden's Stahls Bla; Marc van Vugt's Big Bazar Habit; and Marcus Miller.
Local performers, including Duschene/Fraser/Wittet; Wayne Eagles; Pangea; Terminal Baggage Claim Trio; Steve Groves Quartet; and the Jean-Pierre Alain Quartet, perform free lunch-time concerts at the nearby World Exchange Plaza and Rideau Centre.
A Canadian series, at Confederation Park, includes such luminaries as Bob Brough; Dave Turner; Mike Murley/David Braid; and The Shuffle Demons.
Each day Ottawa bassist John Geggie and his trio leads a late-night jam session at the nearby Cooper Street Hotel & Suites. One of last year's highlights was John Scofield who took the stage, ostensibly for a tune or two, and ended up playing with the trio for over forty-five minutes.
