Top Ten Lonely Women
You know what I mean, not your Auntie Felicity, the Ornette piece, Lonely Woman.
So besides the original from The Shape of Jazz To Come, I like the one I'm listening to now
Billy Bang/ Dennis Charles -- Bangception Willisau 1982
and
Old And new Dreams (s/t: Don Cherry, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, Ed Blackwell)

That "Lonely Woman" is a great tune too, but it's a completely different tune and was composed by Horace, not Ornette.

That makes the Metheny one false too. Double moron ME!!!
"Come to mind" should be a banned expression for me. Too stoopid for having a mind.
I'll edit the post above. Have my pride...
Thanks for pointing my mistake though. Back to learning.

My favorite non-Ornette version is the one by 8 Bold Souls.
Otherwise, I also enjoy the takes by Cruel Frederick and the Kronos Quartet (as well as the aforementioned Zorn and Haden versions).

Radka and Arild on "live in Hamburg" (as I've said a few times earlier on).
Check out posting #817 on the Dennis Gonzalez thread for his poem about Radka Toneff.

Modern Jazz Quartet. They used it as the title tune of a 1962 Atlantic LP.

The Naked City version is pretty cool. Another one that I would list is from Hugh Hopper's Hopper Tunity Box.

The Jazz Doctors (Billy Bang, Frank Lowe, Rafael Garrett, and Dennis Charles) did a wonderful version of Ornette's "Lonely Woman" on their album, "Intensive Care".
Other versions that I often listen to are Ornette's classic version on "The Shape of Jazz to Come", and a 1979 rendition by Coleman alumni on "Old And New Dreams" (ECM 1154).

It was combined with "Rope a Dope" as "American Gumbo" on 32 Jazz, so it shouldn't be that hard to find, Laz.

Yeah! I don't own any recordings by 8 Bold Souls, but I caught them in Detroit quite a few years ago and their rendition of Lonely Woman was the highlight of the show for me.
Bad motherf**kers they are.

Natraj, a Boston-based world/jazz group made up of such local star players as Phil Scarff on soprano, Mat Maneri on violin, Mike Rivard on bass, and a couple of percussionists do an intensely mellow 10-minute version on their album, The Goat Also Gallops, featuring lots of group improvisation.

If I remember correctly, I believe Gary Bartz and Sonny Fortune did a very convincing version on Alto Memories.

Tsahar/ Ragin/ Kowald and Drake give a version of "Lonely Woman" on "Open System" (Marge).
Worth to hear for Kowald as the bass plays a big role in that tune.
And just to proved it, when Michael Bisio decides to play a solo tune on Mike Bisio/Joe Giardullo "Primal Intentions" (Cadence), he does "Lonely Woman" to.
