I second Cool Struttin'.
Leapin' and Lopin' is quite good too, but Cool Struttin' in the best one I've ever heard with Sonny Clark. Art Farmer and Jackie McLean are excellent on it too. Sonny Clark's rhythm section of himself, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones is hard to beat in 1958.

Unlike a lot of posters I was not a big fan of Charlie Rouse; having said that he never sounded better to my ears than on Leapin' and Lopin'.

I dig "Cool Struttin' " but my vote goes for Grant Green's "The Complete Quartets With Sonny Clark " - where both Grant and Sonny are at their best.

I only have 4 Sonny Clark recordings.
Cool Struttin' , Leapin' & Lopin , Sonny's Crib & My Conception.
I like them all but if I had to pick one it would be Leapin & Lopin .

I prefer "Leapin' and Lopin'" to "Cool Struttin'" just because I like the sound of the tenor over the alto, even when the alto is Jackie Mac.
As for my favorite Sonny Clark, that's a tough one... I recently picked up a Rudy Van Gelder CD set from Japan called "Sonny Clark Trio - The Complete Sessions" from Red Trumpet. Not only does this sound phenomenal, the music, which I had almost ignored before, is very good. Philly Joe Jones really shines in the drum chair.
Of course, Audio Fidelity recently reissued Clark's Time Records trio session with Max Roach in the drum seat and that's a good one too. Hmmm. A favorite is tough to pick out of this bunch.
BTW, don't miss "My Conception". This is a sleeper. Hank Mobley is top notch on the date. I would say this gets a lot of playing time in my CD player.
Later,
Kevin

As Henry's pointed out, his best output is on Grant Green's Complete Quartet album w/ Sonny Clark, IMHO.
If you gotta have one under his own name, "Cool Struttin'" it is.

I'll concur with the "Cool Struttin" and Grant Green "Complete Quartets" suggestions. Although Clark is not as prominent, don't overlook the fantastic Dexter Gordon outings, "Go" and "A Swinging Affair."
