Distortion on "Get Up With It"?

I finally got my hands on Miles' "Get Up With It" double set, and I've listened to it the last couple of nights with Grado headphones off a Walkman.

Now, I know I should probably listen to this on a proper stereo before asking the following, but what the heck. Does Michael Henderson's bass tend toward fierce distortion for anyone else? I'm not talking about effects or intentional stuff; I mean like true tape oversaturation. It's really blunting my enjoyment of some great music on tunes like "Maiysha."

Is it there for anyone else or do I have a bum pressing?

I borrowed the first reissue of this album on CD from the public library and found it unlistenable compared to the original vinyl I bought back in 1975. I like this album and have listened to the vinyl a lot over the years, so I was surprised at the poor quality of the import CD pressing. So if the copy you found is not the most recent remastered pressing, you may want to think about trading in and re-investing in a new copy.

Vinyl or cd?

I have it on both but I have never noticed any distortion on the bass but maybe I shall listen again.

Then I have to say I'm genuinely surprised that the remastered version has bass guitar distortion. I never thought the bass parts were ever crystal-clear even in the vinyl version, but I don't recall them being distorted. I haven't heard the remastered version, only the remixed selections on the Panthalassa CD that Bill Laswell put out a few years back. I hope someone else here can be more helpful.
