If you guys haven't already, I recommend reading through the court document on the page I linked to. It's only nine pages long, but some of the stuff in there is really disturbing. I love the quotes about how people would be in the middle of a freaking murder trial when they'd hear what sounded like a blood pressure cuff letting out air. And jurors start to ask, "What's that noise?" And the judge acts all innocent about it. Classic, classic stuff.

The whole shaving-his-testicles-while-hearing-arguments thing was a little bit too much, though.

Compared to some of the stuff that, according to my best friend, who is a court clerk, goes on, it probably would be interesting, but not more interesting than other cases involving judicial moral turptitude. She just finished a case in which a judge was charged with cutting hookers slack, if they capitulated to his sexual demands. The case came to court because he left one of the girls [these were fifteen-eighteen year old girls] out in the middle of nowhere, naked, because she threatened to have him charged with rape. Judges are not the beacons of moral standards, any more than anyone else. BTW, the judge was found guilty, removed from the bench and is serving time in the Big House in central B.C., Canada.
This guy that we're discussing though sets a new standard for ickyness. Whew.

I believe that. There was no joke, punchline or money involved. Actually, prostitution is not a crime in Canada. Solicitation is the crime.
When she appeared in court, several times, as did the other prostitutes HE solicited for sex, HE was the perpetrator of the crime for which he was charged and jailed. There was NO blackmail by the prostitutes involved. The blackmail which was involved was by the judge, who threatened the prostitutes with jail, if they appeared before him in court. joke there.

I agree with Tippy about the multi-tasking engaged in by the judge in question in this case. At least nobody ended up naked and stranded on a country road.
Lack of decorum is much less serious than what the judge in B.C. was accused, tried and convicted of doing.

I'm sure he wanted to pump his penis up before the evening's activities. It's purely a matter of practicality. I see no difference between that and wearing, say, a pacemaker. You could argue that one is essential for life and one is not, true, however, I think it's a matter of privacy that is nobody's business.

I love that charge also. It can be interpreted as almost anything. Should your nether regions itch, in public, scratching them could constitute moral turpitude. When did we go back, yes, back to regulating people's personal behaviour? It seems to me that instilling manners and courtesy is Mom's job, when we are children and if anything people who do things in public that gross out most people are displaying a lack of guidance when they were children as to what is socially acceptable. It's almost too late to instill manners in adults. It's like trying to teach an adult Russian if they didn't grow up speaking it. Not impossible, but never spoken with the authority that the language has if one thinks in it, without translating.

I would imagine that the judge got a charge out of masturbating in public, much the same as other people get from having sex in a commercial aircraft seat, or being naked under their coat, or any one of thousands of things that people do.

The disturbing thing, if there is one, is that the judge was paying attention to his apparent primary activity, while adjudicating serious court matters. He was affecting other people's lives, which is not easily forgiven. The masturbation thing was his own business, gross as it was, IMO.

I think most people try to adhere to that directive. Nothing more embarrassing than having gross behaviour brought to your attention by your assistant, your boss, or the janitor. A time and a place for everything. Scaring the horses by your behaviour is to be avoided. Basic stuff, but, what do I know??
