Western NY Recommendations?
Off to the in-laws in the Buffalo area for a long weekend. As always, I will be stopping by Talking Leaves Books on Main Street in Bflo to satisfy a major poetry fix; I may have dispensation to get away for half a day to make a run to Rochester for some music hunting (there's nothing to speak of in Buffalo, as far as can tell).
I've heard good things about Lakeshore Record Exchange but am uncertain as to how much jazz they're packing there - a quick search for Evan Parker turned up...nothing. Rochester had a writeup in Signal to Noise some time ago; I'll dig through my stack here and see what I can find.
Any other recommendations in Buffalo/Rochester/Niagara area would be appreciated.

Just found the write-up of Bop Shop in a fairly recent issue (#28 or #29) of STN. I'm there.
Crawjo - what can you tell us about Flipped Out Records in Albany?

Definitely go to the Bop Shop in Rochester. I was there a few weeks ago and I really liked the place. They have a decent selection of jazz from independent labels there, and I could have spent much more than I did.
As I understand it, Flipped Out Records is strictly mail order. They don't do over-the-counter business, unless something's changed recently. Unfortunately, there aren't any good record stores in our area.

bt, I was gonna give you a link for Hallwalls Art Center in Buffalo, where I saw Brotz/Drake/McPhee but they haven't updated their webpage since May.

Okay, Trickman, here's the thing to do while you're in Buffalo. Pay a visit to the birthplace of buffalo wings, the Anchor Bar. Anything else you do is icing on the cake, my friend.............

Been there, done that. Not that there's anything wrong with going everytime I'm in town, either.
I can't remember if it was the night before Mrs. Tricky and I got hitched back in 1990, or two nights before, but a large number of us went down to the Anchor Bar for wings and beers. We managed to hook up with not only one, but two other groups of friends/family who were in town for the wedding and who had no idea we would be there. They knew the Anchor Bar was the place for wings. Uncanny.

Here's a few non music ideas
1. Like Frank Lloyd Wright? You can visit 2 of his homes. The Darwin Martin House - which is currently under reconstruction - is open for tours, by appointment I think. They have a website. A second Wright home is Graycliff - the summer residence of the Martin family. Also undergoing reconstruction, this one is much further along. I went there last year and was impressed.
2. The Albright Knox Art Gallery is a world class gallery with a collection heavy with Abstract Expressionism. Fabulous collection. A better than decent representation of Impressionists and post Impressionists as well.
3. The Burchfield- Penney Art Gallery features a vast collection of the works of Charles Burchfield. Worth a visit if you like Burchfield.
4. If you like baseball and aren't hung up on the fact that it's just minor league, the Triple A Buffalo Bisons provide a decent evening of entertainment at an affordable price. Friday night games have fireworks and the biggest crowds - 10-15,000 usually.
5. Niagara Falls - you can easily kill a day there if you do all the tourist stuff. Of course they have gambling there if that floats your boat.
6. Have/bringing children? The Buffalo Zoo's not bad for a couple hour diversion. It's old but they're slowly updating it.
7. I have not been to the Anchor Bar in years, but they do have jazz on Friday and Saturday Nights. Nothing too adventurous, straight ahead kind of stuff featuring the immortal Blue Note recording artist Dodo Greene.

Everything Ed said is true. I am (still, and technically) a licensed architect, but have never stepped foot inside a FLW house in Buffalo, although I've seen all three of his Buffalo houses from the outside. The Albright-Knox has one of the finest collections of 20th century art in the country. And any zoo with both elephants and polar bears qualifies as a Grade A zoo when kids are concerned.
And as far as kids are concerned, the Trickettes (going on 6 and 3) enjoyed Saturday night's Bisons game (came back from 8-1 to win 9-8), Niagara Falls, Grandpa's sailboat, various beaches and swimming pools.
What they dug most of all was a place out in the middle of nowhere (15 minutes from Buffalo or the Falls) called Zooz, kind of a zoo (duh), sculpture garden, playground and water play area all rolled up in one. Those efficient Canucks have taken care to lay out the entire enterprise on a 5K loop, suitable for jogging. I will point out that directions to Zooz from the QEW include taking the Sodom Road exit off the QEW.

I musta forgotten I had kids when I typed that. I was either too busy or too worn out - also we were based out of a summer home west of Fort Erie which would have added an hour total on to the trip, plus the hassle of dealing with customs, twice. Next Buffalo based trip, I'll step out to "fill up the car"...
...in Rochester...
...with CDs.
I did make it to Talking Leaves for poetry, though. New Ferlinghetti. Yum.

There are quite a few in Michigan, but I don't think any of them are on public display.
