Cotton Club Art with Miles Davis Statues

Cotton Club Art with Miles Davis Statues
Local Exhibit of Paintings by Jazz Legend Miles Davis

Santa Monica, CA --Recently discovered paintings by jazz trumpet legend Sir Miles Davis will be on public display this month at Dahl and Gallant Fine Art Gallery in Santa Monica. Dahl and Gallant recently announced the local exhibit of Davis's “other” art. The exhibit is presented in cooperation with the Davis family, who have agreed to bring items from their private collection to supplement the exhibit of 6 original works.

The Davis exhibit will be accompanied by a collection of rare jazz memorabilia belonging to the immortal composer touted the “creator of jive,” Henry Nemo. Nemo's collection documents his days at the Cotton Club in the mid-1930's, where he wrote the lyrics for “I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart,” with Duke Ellington. The historical collection includes original photographs taken by Nemo at the Cotton Club, Cotton Club memorabilia, and a 1939 telegram from Ellington to Nemo, written in jive. Nemo later partnered with other renowned industry music elite including Frank Sinatra, Mildred Bailey and Tommy Dorsey over his 7 decade career, ultimately landing in Los Angeles.

Gallery Co-owner, Dirk Dahl, ties the two collections together with his latest work in tribute to the two jazz greats. His current work featuring Miles Davis is a series of powerful sculptures depicting the trumpet player. Dahl will also present his recently completed, mixed-media on canvas depiction of Henry Nemo's historical jazz collection. Dahl, a self-taught artist, is collected world-wide.

A public reception featuring the current exhibit, “A Journey Through Music, Art and History,” will be held at Dahl and Gallant Fine Art Gallery on Saturday, July 24, from 7-10. The exhibit runs from June 20 through July 31. Dahl and Gallant Fine Art Gallery is located at 1828 Broadway, Suite A in Santa Monica. Telephone – 310-453-5100. Gallery Hours: Wed, through Sat. 11am-5pm
