Classical guitar(ists)

Does anyone on this board listen to or play classical guitar? I know this is a jazz board and all, but there aren't too many classic guitar boards, trust me. Anyone dig Segovia, Williams, Bream, and guys like that? LAGQ?

John

Segovia -- big thumbs up! And Mason Williams even tho he's more popish, but I still bust out that "Classical Gas" (Mason Willians: Music 1968-71) CD every so often. Actually, I just popped it in and it's a mix of many things, country, pop, classical, bluegrass-pickin', even a little jazz.

I think you'd both like the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, if you haven't already heard them.

Count me in. I recently found a copy of what Manuel Barrueco considers his best recording, Sometime Ago. I beleive it's officially out-of-print. He does 12 of Chick Corea's Children's Songs, as well as the title track by Chick and Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert. What I like about most classical guitar recordings is the fact that the sound is so great. That can't always be said about Jazz recordings.

A friend recently turned me onto Leo Brower. That's some deep music.

Since we're talking about classical musicians covering jazz, the Kronos Quartet doing Monk tunes is a great record. Maybe this is a topic for Top Ten....Classical Doing Jazz...hmmm.

Eliot Fisk is quite good, if you've never heard him. I have a few discs he put out in the 90's, but they may not be easy to find. I just searched around and noticed that CDBaby has at least a couple of his CD's, though.

The Philharmonic, here is N.Y, just did a Summertime concert of "Spanish" music by Ravel, Rimski-Korsakov, Falla, Massenet and others. It was all delightful, with, oh, I can't remember the conductor's name but he's the conductor fot the Vancouver orchestra--Bramwell... (he was fabulous, talked to the audience, told funny stories and bad jokes) but the highlight was Sharon Isben as the guest artist doing Rodrigo's wonderful "Concerto for Arunjez" (please excuse the mauling of the title--can someone write it correctly for me--I don't have the program here.) At any rate, the last time the Philharmonic did this was in 1904 or something--this may very well be the only time I'll ever hear that piece live. I had bought my younger daughter (the guitar player) a double cd of classical guitar music and that entire concerto was on it--so we all knew the music quite well. It was really great.

I love classical guitar!

I love classical guitar (lute too, for that matter). My favorite musicians are Segovia and Yepes.

The Rodrigo is titled "Concerto de Aranjuez". I have a wonderful version of it played by Narcisso Yepes.

Yes, me too, another classical guitar fan checkin' in...

I also love jazz played on classical guitar, although it's not all that common. If you're ever in upstate New York (way upstate - Plattsburgh) check out my ol' buddy Jerry Lavene, an absolutely amazing player who uses a standard classical guitar and - last time I saw him about five years ago - was woodshedding with a custom-built 7-string classical.
