Thank you, Fred, as always, for keeping us informed. Re: the Bobby Hutcherson gig on the 28th, I just hope you're more fortunate than those of us in Boston as they just cancelled Bobby's gig that was scheduled for the 26th and 27th! And I was so looking forward to it!

Valerie - I don't know much about the Bobby Hutcherson show or the Kenny Barron show on 4/1. They were listed on digitalcity.com, but I haven't seen any other advertising anouncing a cancellation (or confirming the shows either).

I'm sure it's probably just the Boston show that's been canceled. My guess is that the club didn't have enough advance reservations, which would be a pathetic statement regarding the jazz audience in Boston, if true! But, sad to say, I've seen pathetic-sized audiences for jazz legends in L.A. too, they just don't get canceled in advance though!!

Unfamiliar with psi, but the Claudia Quintet is really excellent - nice instrumentation, and great, involved compositions.

Vince, will you still be in DC on those dates? For that matter, are you still in DC now?

Here are the details from the press release:

>psi

“...levitation caused by hidden impulses manifests itself musically by
allowing time to coexist with limitless space...clamorous clusters
unimpaired be ever present allergic reactions interbreed to eventually
self-destruct within natural silences.”

psi is an electro-acoustic trio featuring Jaime Fennelly (electronics),
Chris Forsyth (electric guitar), and Fritz Welch (drums and amplified
percussion). Together, they form a unique ensemble and sound which focuses
on the dispersal of time, magnified textures, and an ambiguity of
originating source sounds as compositional elements. Spontaneity serves as
a catalyst for the sounds psi creates collectively. The time-based
arrangements and co-existence of such independent statements creates the
dynamic of the music.

Jaime Fennelly, a Brooklyn-based electronicist and improvising composer, and
double-bassist, whose collaborations in choreographer/dancer Miguel
Gutierrez and SQUAWNK, was the recipient of the 2002 Artist Exploration Fund
from Arts International. Chris Forsyth is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, who
has performed with a wealth of the jazz avant garde, including Daniel
Carter, Assif Tsahar, Loren Mazzacane Connors, and Jack Wright. Fritz
Welch is a Brooklyn-based drummer, percussionist, and visual artist who
employs a wide range of traditional drumming devices while also developing a
vocabulary of homemade instruments.

Freedom of individual expression combined with subservience to a group
identity is the ultimate manifestation of psi.

THE CLAUDIA QUINTET

“...sensitive, thinking music, continually changing shape and
texture...whose goals clearly lie beyond jazz.” – Ben Ratliff/New York Times

Led by drummer/composer John Hollenbeck, The Claudia Quintet delivers
original and stylistically diverse repertoire that revels in unusual
harmony, unorthodox instrumentation, and unconventional structure.

Vibest Matt Moran has distinguished himself as a revolutionary vibraphonist
with a unique approach to the instrument. He also leads the groups Sideshow
and Slavic Soul Party. Multi-reedist Chris Speed performs regularly in many
creative improvising bands, including ones led by Tim Berne, Jim Black and
Dave Douglas, and also leads his Pachora, and Yeah, No. Ted Reichman
possesses the versatility and musicality to make the accordion work in free
jazz, klezmer, and pop worlds, in respective collaborations with Anthony
Braxton, David Krakauer, and Paul Simon. Special guest bassist Reuben
Radding has performed in the ensembles of Marc Ribot, Roy Campbell, and Dave
Douglas, to name a few. In addition to this, and his own other projects,
drummer and principal composer John Hollenbeck performs regularly with the
Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra, Meredith Monk, and Fred Hersch.

As with all Transparent Productions performances, 100% of the proceeds go to
the artists.

As opposed to all those arrangements that have nothing to do with time?

Damn!

All those Transparent shows are the shizzy, and hopefully I'll be around to see them. But chances are good that I'll be spending May to December in No. CA (I'm not complaining, mind you). Hopefully I'll be back for the weekends when these shows are playing.

Squawnk is one of alto saxophonist Andrew D'Angelo's bands, if that adds any further clarification. Fennelly and D'Angelo have been gigging together here in New York for some time now, though I've never yet managed to catch them.

I was surprised not to see anybody from the Corner at the Billy Bang concert. I enjoyed it very much. Bang has put together a good new quintet.

I have seen Billy Bang in the past, so I opted for Richard Thompson instead (who I had never seen). I plan to be at Blues Alley tonight for The Bad Plus and Wednesday for Perez/Lacy.

Friday is a busy night in DC as well. I'm going to hear James Carter at the Library of Congress, but Triage is at Sangha Cafe', Renee Rosnes, Gloria Lynne, and Barbara Dennerlein are at the Kennedy Center and Nicholas Payton is at Blues Alley.

Fred, did you like Richard Thompson? He's a solid show...

Vince: The crowd was very good. the Sangha was packed (about 50 people) and standing ovations were given for almost every track. People were enthusiastic.

The quintet did a fine job, especially considering the fact that they had just pulled in from New Orleans and left for New York immediately after the concert.

Actually, I hesitated before going. I had seen both Bang and Lowe in Paris last year (separately, not together) and was somewhat dissapointed.

But this quintet sounded really nice last night. They did a couple tracks from Vietnam - the Aftermath, some compositions from Frank Lowe and pianist Andrew Bemkey, and some other Bang originals. Bemkey, who I had never heard before, played some very interesting stuff.

Fred: I certainly would have gone with you to see Carter. But I have to leave on an airplane early Saturday morning.

Vince - The Richard Thompson show was really good -- very professional, great songs, great sound, Richard was in good voice and in a good mood.

John - I like Billy Bang a lot and would have loved to see the show. Sorry, you'll miss James Carter. He's doing the songs from the "Chasin' the Gypsy" record.

Uh oh - better read up Rene's "excuse" thread in the Alley...

Kidding.

Most likely, after several postponements, I'll be in California then, but if I'm around, I'll let you know.

Me. You're staying that long? Cool! Pete, will you have wheels? (I don't.) And will you want restaurant recs, or will you have your own? (The only use I can think of for wheels is to get to certain restaurants, but equivalent restaurants can be found.)

Besides Sergio and me, John L., Fred K., and Clay Fink have turned out in the past (though I'd love to see others turn out too). It's my impression that not all of them read this thread regularly, so it may take them a while to respond.

No wheels. I'll be staying by DuPont Circle at the Embassy Row Hilton. I had enough Hilton points for a 3-night freebie, and I wanted to make sure I had at least 1 full non-weekend day for the festival, because it'll probably be pretty crowded on Saturday. I usually comb Adams Morgan for interesting, affordable eateries.

I think Fred was looking at Montreal for that weekend. And for all I know Litwack may be chilling out in Siberia.

Pete - I haven't finalized my Montreal plans yet, so I may be around that weekend.

It looks pretty quiet for your visit, but maybe something else will come up.

Twins hasn't posted their June schedule yet. Blues Alley has:

6/26 Diane Hubka (vocals)
6/27 Carl Filipiak Group (guitar)
6/28, 29 Larry Willis, Buster Williams, Ben Riley, Slide Hampton

Bebel Gilberto is at Lisner Auditorium on 6/28

Hubka's a good singer. I met her at IAJE a couple of years ago. I think she's a friend of Laurie Tvedt. But Blues Alley charges real money, right?

Pete--Right! But hardly any of the music of any kind has been publicized yet, and won't be until closer to that weekend. I'll keep my eyes open for suggestions for you, in various genres.

As you may remember, there will be concerts at the Folklife Festival in the early evening at least some of those nights.
