Nothing is ever truly lost, stuck -- somewhere in some unsuspected realm of cyberspace, your post is carrying the day!

Susie Ibarra -- Folklorico (Excellent rec, Crawjo! I liked "Flower After Flower," but I like this one much more! Great contributions by Craig Taborn and Jennifer Cho throughout.)

Gnawa Music of Marrakesh -- Night Spirit Masters (Pete: Do you know this one? Some great stuff on it!)

Lisa Germano -- Geek The Girl (Jaka: You're right, I wasn't disappointed. I may like this one even more than 'Happiness/ Inconsiderate Bitch,' which I thought was terrific! Love that spooky harmonium!)

Darol Anger and American Fiddle Ensemble -- Republic Of Strings (New release, Darol with a bunch of red-hot twenty-somethings. Not as searingly brilliant as Diary of Fiddler nor as monumental as Heritage, but a very enjoyable album. I'll be importing several pieces into my dances.)

Shelly Manne Septet featuring Jimmy Giuffre and Art Pepper -- West Coast Sounds

Speedy West -- There's Going To Be A Party (Live takes from the Tennessee Ernie Ford radio show, with intros and/or outros by Tennessee on every cut. Loose and uneven, but some sparkling playing, sometimes more daring and better than the studio versions. There's not nearly enough Jimmy Bryant on the album, although what there is is choice.)

Dorothy Ashby -- Afro-Harping (Disappointing. Blah.)

The Coasters -- 50 Coastin' Classics (2 CDs)

Witold Lutoslawski -- Orchestral Works, vol. 7 (The 'Preludes and Fugue for 13 solo strings' from this album remains my favorite Lutoslawski.)

Nancy Wilson/ Cannonball Adderley (s/t)

The Lester Young/ Teddy Wilson Quartet -- Pres and Teddy

George Strait -- Greatest Hits

George Strait -- Greatest Hits, vol. 2

Andrew Cyrille/ Mark Dresser/ Marty Ehrlich -- C/D/E

Raymond Scott -- Reckless Night & Turkish Twilights

I agree. Unfortunely I bought this after reading a very positive review in The Wire. Totally boring stuff!

I'm glad you like the Germano. Not enough singer/writers like her...

On which label is the Lutoslawski you mentionned?
I'm not that familiar with his work but remember liking some pieces and I'd like to give this one a try considering your interest in it.
Thanks,

EDIT:
And... I'm listening to NOTHING.
I went to see Wayne Shorter with Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland & Brian Blade last night. Great show. Very inspired Hancock, fireworkish Blade, awesome Holland and tired-but-royal Shorter.
This was followed in a smaller room of the theater by Marc Ducret solo on unamplified acoustic guitar (which he never did live before). One of the greatest musical moments of my life.
Since I woke up this morning, I try to recollect and hum/sing/tap all the wondeful stuff I heard last night. Enough to keep my ears enjoyed.

Damn I wish I'd have heard that. Did he play short songs or was it a long stream of improv?

David Murray Quintet with Ray Anderson & Anthony Davis (this is ok Murray, in fact the lineup is kind of interesting, but I just don't find Anthony Davis a very compelling pianist)
John Hagen - Segments (thanks to Nate for this one, which I like quite a bit. Hagen has a distinctive sound on tenor, alto & soprano and each of these songs is very well done. This is the first time I've heard Denman Maroney that he isn't bending the strings, which I find disconcerting, at least the way he does it; I like his playing more on this than on anything I've heard previously, both live and on disc. Who are these guys Blumenkranz & Capp; they sound great!!)
Henry Kaiser & Wadada Leo Smith - Yo Miles! disc 1 (getting this has eluded me through the years and I'm glad I finally caught up to it. I'm sure this was as much fun to play as it is to listen to)

Yer one edgy dude, Sisco.

Zentralquartet - "Zentralquartet" : Recorded in 1990. This is a GREAT record.
Steve Lacy - "Work" : Steve with a different trio; Daniel Humar and (the great, unsung) Anthony Cox. Steve is at the top of his game on this, and it was recorded only two years ago. He left WAY too early.
Steve Lacy - "Clinkers" - Still warming up to this. His splo stuff is pretty demanding, but I like it.

My wife made me turn this off. One former girlfriend almost atacked me physically for playing "Pangea". What is it about this era of Miles' music? Or is it just me?

Thanks,
Jaka, I can answer this for you since I was the one who recommended it to Steve. The label is Naxos.

It's not just you; I have to be in a certain mood to listen to this period Miles. I'm sure that the old bluenote board was full of posters that couldn't stand this era but totally fawned over the earlier stuff. If I were to trash the portion of my music collection that my wife can't stand, my collection would be extremely small.

And that Leibman/Copland on looks interesting...

now playing: Jerry Bergonzi - Lineage

Wow, thanks for posting that. He's got a bunch a free music on there. 6 (!) whole gigs, I'll definitely be checking that out. The one you listened to was Jason Moran's 2nd gig with the group! Before any of his records.I think Osby was the first to "discover" him.

SEJ - Horizon Reassembled is really good, but I like everything Bobby Watson does. The playing and songs are strong (although I could have done without "The Look of Love"). I haven't heard the Blue Note Horizon records so I can't compare, but I can't imagine they're too much better than this.

I like the Copland/Liebman Hatology set, too. The playing is mostly quiet and sparce -- more Copland's style than Liebman's, which is OK with me. It's a 2-CD set though, and I tend to think one would have been enough.

Post-Motown Bop is just infectious and upbeat, though a little "sweet". I preferred Present Tense (on Columbia) myself (more interesting writing and arrangements), but I like both. Unfortunately, both are out of print.

If you think "The Look Of Love" was a bad choice for Horizon Reassembled, how about "The Candyman" on Pete Laroca's Swingtime. Truly egregious. Scott Yanow calls it "slightly out of place" in his AMG review. Ha! I'll say! My wife heard that and looked at me as if she were thinking "What is that corny shit you're listening to?"

Misha Alperin - Night
now playing: Diana Krall - Live in Paris (her take on Dorough's Devil May Care is great)

DK seems to stick under some people's dentures here. I haven't wanted any of her studio albums myself, but when the live album came out I thought it was a good time to see if she had the goods. Well, it works for me, particularly the uptempo swingers.

Among the CDs I brought with me on vacay were two recent Thirsty Ears, Berne's "Big Satan" and Taborn's "Junk Magic"--so I had the chance to listen to them each several times. I like them both quite a bit, except for one stinky 7-minute cut on the Taborn called "Bodies at Rest and in Motion."

Wasn't there anything else they could have used to fill that time??? Otherwise, both extremely tasty!

Thanks
Regarding the second amazing concert gnhrtg went to:
The musician really had no choice - he knew that gnhrtg was in town!
Looking forward to the reviews.

No music so far, but I'll be listening to a couple of tracks from

Misha - Who's Bridge
Arve Henriksen - Chiaroscuro
