Henry Grimes on Ayler Records

I saw this information on the Grimes website:

"Joyful news!! The first label release by the NEW Henry Grimes will be out soon!! It's The Henry Grimes Trio featuring David Murray and Hamid Drake live in Europe, 'O4 on Ayler Records ()!!"

This has me salivating. Anyone have any idea when this will be available?

A post on another BBS indicated that they are shooting for an October release.

I saw Henry in 2003 at Vision (with Willima Parker and Rob Brown). He seemed a little rough. This year, though, I thought he held his own with Cyrille and Crispell. I think a trio with Murray and Drake would sound good with just about anyone.

Jan Ström has the whole story, I'm sure - but, as far as I know,
the recording in question was made at the Kerava Jazz Festival
in Finland on June 5th this year. Couldn't make it there myself,
unfortunately.

I'm down.

Hey, Fink -- I didn't know you'd attended Vision in 2003. There we were in the same place and didn't know. Kind of like Madison Square this year. :-)

Gary, Clay was the guy who showed up late at Funky Broome. If you had done the right thing and come to the Indian dinner & the Eskelin/Liebman show you'd have seen him there too, not to mention the long-suffering Harriet.

Jealous people bore me.

I looked around for you in 2003 but I didn't know what you looked like. Now I do .

We are looking for a release at the "Perspectives 2004 - Festival for Creative Music". Curated by Mats Gustafsson, 21 - 24 October, Vasteras, Sweden.

The music on the Vol. 1 is not decided yet. In addition to the Kerava recording, we also have recordings from Italy and Austria.

Jan,

I just wanted to thank you for putting together the wonderful Jimmy Lyons box. I know that I'm late to the party, but I did receive this last week and have been really enjoying it. Lyons was truly an improvisational genius, and an under-recorded one at that, but your diligent work has really made up for a lot of that. Bravo!

Thanks for the nice words! It's warming!

If you don't want to "almost miss again" the first release of "the new" Henry Grimes, we have the same pre-ordering system for the this album as we had for the Lyons Box; you can pre-order it at:

ayler.com@ayler.com

But, today no info regarding recording location(s) or price as not decided yet. But, the music is great!

Tony,

We have had delays due to invloved people, the artists and the liner notes writers (Ben Young and William Parker) are very busy.
The last material came in yesterday which means that the release will be January/February -05 as late November/December are no good months for a CD release.
However, a taste of it will be presented on the Wire Tapper CD in the December issue.

Wow. Thanks, Jan! I'm looking forward to it. I heard the cut on the recent Wiretapper and it sounded good. Thanks a lot.

I like the cover as well. Nice job.

Jan -- Thanks very much for the Grimes Trio CD. It arrived safely two days ago, and I got to listen to it last night. Very nice! Thanks a lot!

Ditto from me, Jan! Cannot believe it arrived already, but here it is today. Listening to it as I type, the trio is in fine form. David is kicking it hard on bass clarinet, and I love it! Henry appears to have it all together again, and I sure dig his big sound. Hamid is behind the kit, need I say more? Thanks again, Jan!

Hopefully, Walter will get to hear this one, speaking of Mr Grimes.

It's nice to hear David Murray in a free(er) context again. Excellent trio. Hamid tears it up as everyone should expect by now.

Nice job all the way around, Jan. I love the photo, where Hamid is smiling at Henry Grimes while playing.
