Chuck Stewart's Dolphy Photo
I'm sure many of you have seen the photograph. It's a profile shot of Dolphy with his bass clarinet. I've googled and yahooed and the best I can find is Jazz Times' offer of 600 dollars to a grand for a print. I'm interested in an affordable poster. Anybody seen a source?

I'm interested too.
I'm tired of only finding prints of these photos that go for about the same money my speakers went for.

Scott,
Funny thing is for about a split second I thought about giving up the $600. But luckily I came to my senses.

Yep. I'm right there with you.
I almost forked out for that Dolphy photo from '58 on the Mosaic site(I'm slowly creating a Jazz theme in my listening room and thought it would make a perfect addition). I believe that one is going for $600 as well.
When I told my wife that I was considering it, she said "$600, for a PICTURE"??!!
I can always count on her for a bit of reality.

Here are my suggestions:
1. Go here (scroll down) and download/save this unattributed copy of the photo:

Note: As a formality, please save the photo from "here" above, not from this post of mine, and please forget that you ever saw the photo at Speakeasy.
2. If possible, open the photo in an image-editing program, such as Photoshop or IrfanView, and save a new version of the photo at the best possible resolution.
3. Try to call Chuck Stewart at 201-833-8204. At least one person has reached him there and gotten a gracious response (to a different inquiry). Tell him you found an unattributed version of the photo online, and ask his permission to have it made into a print or a poster for your personal use only. If he asks where you found it, give him the URL of the website that you downloaded the photo from ("here" above). If he says yes, try to get an e-mail address for him and give him yours, and try to get a brief e-mail from him giving permission.
The following post is the source of that phone number. The post can be found here.

Hi
I was just breezing through the net to see anything new of Chuck Stewart.
And came across this...You can contact Chuck Stewart at this telephone #
201-833-8204.
Best wishes and God Bless

4. Talk to someone at Kinko's or another photocopying shop. Ask them for price quotes on having them make a print or a poster. Also ask them whether they want to use
--a version of the Dolphy photo that you print (at the best possible resolution) and supply to them, or
--a version of the Dolphy photo (your best-quality saved version) that you send to them as an e-mail attachment.
Take a good, hard look at your best-quality saved version of the photo. Be sure to talk to Kinko's (or wherever) about getting rid of its faults, such as perhaps "fuzzy stuff" around the outline of Dolphy, and ask whether getting rid of its faults will affect the price of having a print or a poster made.
If they inquire about permission, show them the e-mail wherein Chuck Stewart gave you permission (I hope).
Of course, if you want just a print, rather than a poster, chances are that you could make one that suits your purposes yourself, using your own printer or anyone else's printer.
Good luck!

Rita, could you untangle the Talmud for me and get back to me by Hannukah?

Why don't you just use my "What if...?" pic of Dolphy?

Why did you pick such a distant date? I can get back to you sooner if you prefer.
Thanks, Pete. I wish I could find someone to pay me to search for stuff online.

Darryl--Sure.
JM--This is all I know about Canon law: The composer of a very popular Canon is named Pachelbel, not Taco Bell.
Folks--
If anyone calls Chuck Stewart and gets an unfavorable response, please post here and report that, whereupon I'll delete my post #5 (and with it, the phone number). He may have already been called too often and received too many similar requests long before I passed along the phone number. Likewise, please post here and let us know if you discover that it's no longer a good phone number.
That having been said, if I wanted a poster or a print of the Dolphy photo, I'd give my suggestions a try.
