Wow, that's a lot of good people. If you go, be sure to say "hi" to Carl Allen, Javon Jackson, Ron Blake and Vincent Herring for me.

That *is* a lot of great artists. I guess they're forgiven for last year's [cough] jazz sort of thing.

I may be wrong, but I'm sure that James Carter has played this festival on more than one occasion. Nothing much here for me to get excited about. Ramsey Lewis? Lenny White? Houston Person? Lou Rawls? Aretha Franklin? Maybe she'll lip sync a song or two like she did for the national anthem in game 5 of Pistons playoffs. Chicago here I come!

Larry, yeah, they'll all my pals, although I don't get to see them as much as I used to! They are all sweeties, except for Vincent, maybe, who can be kindof a jerk. But what else can you say about someone whose favorite book is "Atlas Shrugged"? But, he's usually pretty nice, anyway.

You may be right, Frisco. I haven't missed a Festival since '88, but I sure don't make it to every day and night of every show. Last year, it was just one day.

Ok! I'll make it down, but I'm not sure what days/nights I'll be there yet.

I made it only to the Monday show, but had a good time. My weekend was unfortunately busy with personal obligations, but I made sure to make time for it. Especially fun was the Eugene Maslov Trio. A piano trio, and I like the way Maslov plays. I was stunned to find out that the drummer I was digging was Lenny White. I've been listening to Lenny forever, and I've seen him play live before, but didn't recognize him at all. I'm watching this guy playing ride with the left hand on a pink drumset, wearing a hat, and I *still* didn't know it was him. The group sounded great.
The Gerald Wilson Orchestra sounded great, too. Fiery soloists.
Good times.

Tsk...
Larry Larry...come on man...you're slipping! Must've been the pink drums....
I heard that performance was slick. A bassist with whom I often play went up for this fest and came back telling me about having heard Lenny White and others. He seemed to be most fascinated by Lenny's playing.
Maybe it was the hat that got you....yeh, that's it.

Chad,
I was embarrassed at myself, man! I just felt like a dumbf**k after I heard the name. Like the world's biggest "duh" sounded inside my head. Lenny was outstanding. He's always had a fairly heavy handed, Tony-esque approach to straight ahead stuff, IMO. I liked it and all, but it sounded like a fusion drummer playing on drums tuned for fusion, etc. But not this night. That's part of what threw me off. Lenny was very soft spoken and articulate, coaxing some really pretty phrases out of the kit. Really nice, and a surprise as I said.
