Max Roach's Health Question

What exactly is Max's status? Yesterday I got Downbeat and Jazz Times in the mail both of which had articles on the passing of Elvin Jones. In one of the articles it mentioned that Max attended Elvin's funeral in a wheel chair.

Darryl, I can't definitively answer your question, and can only find some mentions of Max in a wheelchair recently, as with the stories you noted. That doesn't exactly instill confidence that his health is great.

Max is one of my all-time favorite drummers, a melodic, polyrhythmic master.

I think I read a post here in another thread that mentioned that Max didn't look good.

One of the articles I read (Jazz Times I think) written by Elvin's drum tech talked about one of Elvin's last pperformances (Yoshi's?). Kind of heart-rending.

You know, everyone must pass. It just seems that so many of the giants I was introduced to (via records) back in the '70s when i was first getting into jazz are going now.

When I thnk about it the first jazz concert I attended was a Chet Baker performance in a small club in Augsburg, W. Germany. The second was an ART Ensemble of Chicago Concert (Bowie and Jarman gone), John Carter in Moers, Air in Munich (hopkins and McCall), Buddy Rich and Dizzy in D.C., and of course the giants I heard on records. It's like a constant reminder of our mortality. You wish these guys could go on and on.
