The strength of ten men

So I'm jamming with some guys last weekend, and I experienced a phenomenon that only occurs for me once every 4 months or so. I had the strength of ten men. Total command over the instrument, technique for miles and boundless creativity. My hands felt soft and the sticks just seemed to move on their own. I was in a zone. Everything I played came out hip and felt good. You know how they say when you're on a hot streak at the plate, every baseball you see looks like a beachball? Well, that's how the time and groove felt to me. It's a welcome relief from the usual struggles I go through when I'm expressing myself musically.

Any of you musicians ever have moments like that? They don't come around very often for me, but I always try to savor them when they do, because they sure don't last. In this case, I hadn't played the drums in almost a month. Normally, I feel creative after a break from the instrument, but technically rusty. This time, the chops were somehow still there, too. Gotta love that. Tell me I'm not the only one who experiences this so I don't feel too weird.

Think and post!

Hercules, hero of song and story!
Hercules, winner of ancient glory!
Fighting for the right,
fighting with his might;
With the strength of ten
Ordinary men!

Hercules, people are safe when near him!
Hercules, only the evil fear him!
Softness in his eyes,
Iron in his thighs;
Virtue in his heart,
Fire in every part of
The Mighty Hercules!

I'm nearly always "there" while drawing and painting, it comes natural.

I've been "in the zone" shooting a basketball many times. By contrast, I've also experienced being unable to hit water from a pier.

My good friend Tony is intrinsically blessed with the hot hand when picking up single women. Numbers totalled in triple figures before a daughter and marriage reeled him in (I hope). Now that's talent.

It's been a really, really long time. I think it musta been 1992, I was on a gig at some school in Great Barrington, Mass. I was totally on that night. Could do no wrong. I took like eight choruses on a blues and never repeated myself. Man, if I could bottle whatever it was I had that night...

Yup. Its being "in the zone". Happens every once in a while for me. Wish it could happen more. Usually, once I become aware of it, it stops.
