Top Five Albums You've Never Heard, But Want To

Here's a chance to list those classic or highly regarded albums that you've yet to hear. Since I'm still fairly new to the music, my list contains several essentials, I think.

1. Charles Mingus - Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
2. Max Roach - We Insist! Freedom Now
3. William Parker - The Peach Orchard
4. AMM - Newfoundland
5. Sun Ra - Lanquidity

Crawjo - consider yourself lucky, everything on your list is still available.

Here's (a small portion of) what I'm curious about:

Fred van Hove: Church Organ (FMP, 1979)
Rudiger Carl: King Alcohol (FMP, 1972)
Pierre Favre Quartett w/Schweizer/Kowald/Parker (Wergo, 1969)
Butcher/Malfatti/Lovens/Russell/Durrant: News from the Shed (Acta, 1989)
Anthony Braxton Quartet: Live at Moers Festival (Moers, 1974)

this one's in the works for reissue, Unheard Music Series, including 20 new minutes of material. it's on Butcher's News page on his web site, where he also says what the new Polwechsel personnel is:

I can't see how you can go wrong with this one. I've yet to hear someone say she didn't like it.

Waiting for the inevitable contradiction,

the news from shed would have been my answer to question, and after years of waiting it will be mine. but i hate it when they put on extra minutes that werent good enough at the time. unless this is some adjacent music and not session leftovers. still probally too long. butcher/nakamura interesting.

Jimmy, you have to hear "Compulsion". If only the idiots at Blue Note would reissue it.

It was LP only, so it's hard to know what sort of judgment went on when picking for a lower fixed time limit. Their opinion of the left-out material may not be lower than of the included material.

Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;
Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear'd,
Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone

The News from the Shed LP is really fine. Also the first Russell/Butcher/Durrant disc, which I think was called Conceits.

Some albums I'd like to hear:

Chris Anderson, Solo Ballads
Evan Parker/Han Bennink/Derek Bailey, The Topography of the Lungs
Yosuke Yamashita's Ayler tribute
Rudiger Carl, Book
Anthony Braxton, Seven Compositions (Trio) 1989

I have this and would share, but I got it on vinyl at Rick Ballard's in Berkley in '88, and it's, uh, less than pristine.
Kicks ass.

I have these, and Van Hove's Requiem For Che Guevera, with monsterous church organ/choir and free players.
See the Santana post to Frisco. The 80's were a less than handle with -care phase of my life (plus, I loaned them out [!] to friends with similar platter-handling skills).
Ballard's had a staggering FMP selection, new & used.

Noj, "Components" is one of Hutcherson's finest, IMO. And I just received a message from CD Universe stating that they have an import CD available. Components, Happenings, and Dialogue are my particular Hutcherson favorites. There is a suite of music (taking up side two) on Components written by Joe Chambers that is excellent, including "Juba Dance, and "Air". Check it out!

I'd like to hear those orchestral Blake things on Owl. There are also a couple of George Russell discs I haven't been able to find. I'd also like Miles's "Live at Fillmore East" to be released without all those ridiculous cuts.

And, though I've heard it, I, uh, wish somebody would re-release "Sadhana"....

I never really could get much out of Ode to the Death of Jazz, actually. The Allan is very good. Haven't heard the other two, & probably should...

In terms of Erstwhile recommendations, Duos for Doris is a good place to start, but I also really like Too Beautiful to Burn, La Voyelle Liquide, and the Hands of Caravaggio. The price goes down on each disc when you order two or three, if you're interested.

Zo-Ko-Ma: Atilla Zoller/Lee Konitz/Albert Mangelsdorff/Baree Phillips/Stu Martin (MPS) -- MPS releases have been drifting out here and there, but I've never seen this one either re-issued or on LP.

Planet Oeuf: w/ Phil Durrant and Gunter Muller (might be the first recording for both). This one was on a list of Atavistic reissues, but seems to have disappeared.

Alan Siva: My Country (Leo) -- I remember seeing some threads about this one when the BYG Cellestial Communcations Orchestra recordings were reissued.

Steve Lacy: Threads (Horo) w/ Alvin Curran and Frederic Rzewski

Lester Bowie: African Children (Horo) w/ Amina Myers and Philip Wilson
