For Sale: Deer Head Inn, Delaware Water Gap, PA

The Deer Head Inn, Home of Jazz in the Poconos is situated on one acre of picturesque land in historic Del. Water Gap, PA.* It is on the corner of Main St. (rt. 611) and Mountain Road, 5 minutes from Route 80 and the Delaware River.

This is a four-story hotel, restaurant, bar and jazz club built around 1865.* The main building was constructed by Samuel Overfield and called the Central House.* In the thirties it was renamed The Deer Head Inn.* It is a Victorian style with a mansard roof.* There are two stories of wrap around porches covered with wisteria, which attracts photographers from near and far in May.* We are bounded by the Appalachian Trail to the east and the Del. Water Gap National Park.***********

The main building is approximately 6,768 sq. ft. with an add-on kitchen and restrooms of 843 sq. ft.* There is an annex building that is 2 stories, 810 sq. ft.* Currently it is a shop downstairs and an apartment upstairs.* There are 4 apartments and 11 rooms available to rent in the main building.* The restaurant and bar seats 110 total.* A Steinway model m piano, well maintained, is included in the sale in keeping with the music tradition.

We have city water and sewage.* The heat and water are oil fired with 2 new burners and tank.* The main kitchen is supplied with gas for cooking as well as some of the apartments.* There is a new rolled rubber roof on the main building.

There are two parking lots.* One is across the street in a plaza island, once a park area with a fountain.* To the west of the building is another.* There is also plenty of off street parking.

This is a thriving business with emphasis on live music, in particular, jazz.* Good food, jazz and ambience have made this a Mecca for artistic people since 1953.* Bob & Fay Lehr started the jazz policy with John Dengler and Dixieland in the fifties.* John Coates came around 1962 and became the house piano player.* Since then, the names are endless in the jazz world:* Al Cohn, Phil Woods, Dave Liebman, Bob Dorough and more.* Some live recordings were produced here, Keith Jarrett leading the way.

Dona & Chris Solliday bought the Deer Head Inn in 1992 and brought in a whole new list of names just to add to a saga of American Music History, such as Bill Mays, Fred Hersch, and David “Fathead” Newman.* This has been a family run business for over 50 years treated with a lot of love, giving the community a place to come and leave the everyday stresses behind.

Price:** $649,000.*

Call Dona or Chris Solliday at (570) 424 – 2000.
