Funkster Rick James Dead

Singer Rick James was found dead in his home in L.A. today. I don't have further details. One report suggested a drug overdose, while another said he died of an apparent heart attack.

LOS ANGELES -- Police in Los Angeles report funk singer Rick James, best known for the 1981 hit "Super Freak," died Friday morning, apparently of natural causes.

James, 56, died at a residence near Universal City.

After his big hit, James' fame began to fade as he became embroiled in legal problems and health troubles. James was convicted in 1993 of assaulting two women. The first attack occurred in 1991 when he restrained and burned a young woman with a hot pipe during a cocaine binge at his house in West Hollywood. He was free on bail when the second assault occurred in 1992 in James' hotel room. James was sentenced to more than two years in state prison. In 1997, he released a new album, but a year later he suffered a stroke while performing at Denver's Mammoth Events Center, derailing a comeback tour. In 1998 he also underwent hip replacement surgery.

That news is super freaky indeed. Maybe MC Hammer will die similarly, since he so blatantly ripped of James on U Can't Touch This.

Here's a recent photo of James, taken in June at ASCAP's Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.

Sad news, of course, but when one considers his medical history and self-abuse, not so surprising.

I met Mr. super freak in the mid 80's at a jazz bar I hung at in Buffalo N.Y. called the Bluenote. I was sitting with a Lady who was performing there. She never sang at this place before and new no one there but me .I met her at another jazz place she sang at. She asked me if she could sit with me between sets. She was one beautiful black Lady .A Whitney Houston look alike. We were sitting talking and in walked mr Cool.Buffalo is his hometown. All heads turned his way.He looked over the place and then looked our way.He had on a white floor length fur coat.Over he came when he saw us.He then tried to pick her up.She said no, I'm with Don. oooooh that me me feel good. He then looked at me and smiled and said , Take good care of her man. and walked out .I said why didn't you talk to him, don't you know who that is.She said she never met him but new who he was and wanted nothing to do with him and besides that I'm with you. My heart went piter pattterrrrrrrrr

I'm reminded of the time, also back in the 80s, when my wife and I were checking into the Plaza in NYC for the weekend. While we were standing at the check-in desk a very animated and agitated black man came up behind us and was kind of hopping from one foot to the other. Not wanting to wait any longer he called over to the desk clerk and said, "Hey man, where's the men's room?" The clerk pointed towards the restrooms whereupon the guy took off without delay. I turned to my wife and said, "Hey, that was Prince!" She laughed, rolled her eyes and informed me that it was Rick James. Duh..................

Don, that is, as grandpa used to say, a totally extraordinary story. Your cool meter just went to 1,000.

"SuperFreak" was an undeniably great hit--sexy, funny, and totally one the one. I liked him not for his music but because he was first, last, and always, a total sleaze. I cite my favorite Rick James album cover as incontrovertible proof of this:
