Questions about guide tones
Hey guys, I have a few questions about guide tones I hope you can
answer
1) Are guide tones the 3rd and 7th of the chord or can the 5th and the
root be considered guide tones as well? What about chord extensions
such as a 9th, or a flat 5th?
2) If you are imposing your own chords like using an FM7 instead of a
D-7 do you consider the A in the chord as the 5th of D-9 or the 3rd of
FM7 (this would make a difference if only the 3rd and 7th were guide
tones). If you want to use the FM7 sound over the D-7 and keep the G7
sound on that chord, would you just go from the 3rd of the FM7 to the
3rd of the G7 or would you use the 5th?
3) What are some tricks to go from one guide tone to another? Of
course one is to just go directly from one note to the next. Another
one I've been getting mixed results with is enclosure; I've been going
from the 5th in the IIm chord, to the 4th or b5th in the V7 and I end
up at the 3rd.
I've been able to play some good lines without mastering guide tone so
far, but I can recognize that its my inability to use these tones
properly that gives my lines that "pentatonic" feel instead of a jazz
feel with the chord changes being emphasized.
Thank you for any help
