Reveal your fashion fantasies
I thought it might be interesting to see what my fellow posters either once wore or wanted to wear.
While rummaging in a closet this morning, in search of some Lonnie Johnson tapes, I came across a 1972 issue of Ebony magazine. Flipping through it was a nostalgia trip, but nothing I saw is a match for the following. In fact, Eleganza was the place to send your money if you wanted to wear the right (?)threads.
In case it is too small to read, here is the enticing ad copy:
Sensational new California inspiration, guaranteed to make people turn and stare at any man who wears it! The light weight coat, of 65% rayon, 27% acetate, 8% mohair, is FORTY-THREE inches long, sweeping from a 9" pointed collar to a broad two button double breasted front, down to a slim, tapered open bottom for a truly striking effect. Matching slacks have 2 1/2" Continental waistband; 21" flare bottoms; front western pockets; slash back pockets. A868 Burgundy with Gray trim. A869 Black with White trim. A870 Black with White trim. Coat sizes: S,M,L,XL. Slacks waist sizes: 28 to 36. $39.95 ppd., or $5 deposit on C.O.D., you pay postage. Satisfaction guaranteed. See our collection of dramatically styled apparel and imported footwear.

Chris A, that's hysterical! Thanks for posting that! I was a little hippie when I was in Jr. high, so I always wore peasant, Indian batik tops and I had this one pair of jeans that I adored so I kept patching them over and over with different kinds of fabric all over the backside, the front. God, that must have been a sight!! I wore them all the time. Once my Mom told me "I wish I could get those jeans from you". I said "why, they wouldn't fit you". I thought that was funny. My mom laughed too.
In high school I had this red, poncho type raincoat that I think I thought looked like something the Stones or Jimi Hendrix would wear. My boyfriend loved it.
When I was in 2nd grade, I affected a "Beat poetess" look and would only wear black tights, and this tunic-y shirt. Where I got this idea when I was 7 years old, I don't know. I loved it. I didn't do the "Beat" look again until H.S. and college. Then I would only wear black sweaters, pants, black dresses and long dangly earrings--2 in one ear, one in the other. All I needed was a cigarette dangling from one hand while I listened to my "cool" jazz. "Cept I didn't smoke. Hey, I still dress like a "Beat poetess" but I stopped wearing the 3 earrings and now only wear one in each ear.
I'm not sure it's good that I still dress like a beat poetess.

"65% rayon, 27% acetate, 8% mohair:" sounds sticky.

Before the blaxploitation films hit big you made a fashion statement with an Army field jacket. Then after Shaft came out you had to have the full length leather coat, turtle neck, flaired pants with cuffs, and of course, platform shoes. Topped off with a knitted "apple" cap. And you needed the complimentary "pimp" walk to go along.
Ahh, the good old days!

I had this dress back then; I don't have it now! It wasn't as short as minidresses and miniskirts would soon become. The top part was actually a little less purplish and a little more hot pink.

It really was a nice dress, JM. It was kind of a heavy jersey knit. I wish I could use Paint better (this was my first attempt), and I wish I could draw better.
To answer your question from another thread, my missing-purse-related tasks are coming along, and thanks for asking! I still don't have ID, though.
I've already called just about every NYC phone number, but nobody is really into matching up what's been turned in with what's been reported lost.

Thanks, JM.
This is totally my fashion fantasy, except that it's not a very good picture of a "Gibson Girl" hairdo, which I've always wanted:

I thought this thread was supposed to be more about what we wore when we were younger or even now. I find that topic to be a lot more interesting than just pictures of outfits or whatever of things we think are cool.
So, Jazzzoline, what do you actually wear now and when you were younger? Did you have a fashion style? Are you a Fredericks of Hollywood catalog model by any chance (I love their stuff--seriously, I buy the bras)?

In the dim, dark 60's I had a green polyester pants suit with a Nehru collar. Poly shirt in complemantary colors.
It's a wonder somebody didn't shoot me.

Well, I interpret "fantasies" to be just that - things about which we have fantasized in the past or fantasize even now. I find *that* more interesting.
