Sold My House/Bought a House

The Market in the Central Valley of California has gone crazy.

We recieved a full-price offer on our house in the time it took to announce it was available. Four hours. No kidding.

Then, we bought a house...within four days.

We're moving in a week, but renting back until the 25th. School starts tomorrow. I'm at a brand new high school. Still finishing up course work for credential renewal. I have no clue what I'm supposed to teach. My wife hasn't found a job. I'm stressed to the max and ready to pop.

I'd like very much to just sit in a corner and cry.

Sorry if I have offended.

I'm taking a break from this wonderful place...be back here in a few days.

Timmy,

I hope you get a big profit.

Stress can be overcome by a glass of Zinny and a big Cohiba.

Almost everything in Sonoma County sells same day for above the asking. But buying is expensive, too, and everything new is going for 800G+; so the only way to make money is to sell and buy a home and four rental properties in the midwest. But then you have to live in the midwest!
So we stay put.

Buying and selling and moving is always traumatic. My wife is back for teachers' meetings today and the kids are back this Monday. I hope you start a little later, Tim, and have a little slack to take care of business and yourself. Sounds like a lot on your plate right now.

Our son Daniel just moved out on Monday, into the the dorms of a high-tech art school in Emeryville. That's a little traumatic, too, although it was time. The "dorms" is an old warehouse, almost as funky as some of the places as I lived in in the 60s.

No offense meant, Chris. My wife is from rural Michigan, Grand Rapids area, and we're both of the opinion that the midwest is good place to be from.

Congratulations!

Let us know when the two transactions CLOSE so we can celebrate all the contingencies having been met etc etc etc and the actual Sales/Purchases.

I'm back.

I am currently typing this from inside a great big, deep empty room.

Everything is in boxes and it may take an entire YEAR before we sort it all out...but the worst part of moving is over.

Now comes the painting [we already re-floored the entire house before we moved], the sorting, the unpacking, the endless discussion about where things go and yada, yada, freakin', yada.

I've decided something.

I am never moving again. Not ever. Period. End of discussion.

What a tremendously LARGE pain in the ass.

sheesh.

Makes me feel glad that my husband and I will be inheiriting a house when my mom dies since we can't afford to buy a house in the San Francisco Bay Area even with 2 good incomes.

I fully understand.

My friend and his wife have a home in The City and they tell me that even a bachelor pad goes for $750,000.

I am amazed.

Goody, how far away did you move from your old house?

We've just put our house on the market. Tomorrow (Saturday) we have our first open house. I've been "gussying up" the place all week: re-staining the deck (after seeing the results, I wondered why it took me three years to get to it), gluing loose front porch bricks back in place, re-carpeting the downstairs, then trimming the bottoms of all the doors so they'll fit again, then re-painting them to cover all the schmutz I put on them when I was trimming the bottoms, etc. Tonight I mow and weed-whack the lawn so it'll be nice and pretty tomorrow.

Good job, Tim, and good for you, jmj.

I remember when we got our first house ready for sale. I redid one bathroom, we had recently refloored the kitchen and we replaced the shabby front door. Damn, it was so nice, I didn't really want to leave.

Well, we're building a new house, which is muchnicer and in a far nicer setting than the current one, so I've managed to get over the "why am I moving from here" thing.

Congratulations!

We were heading to a new city, so we couldn't really take our house with us. Still, that feeling of "I should have done this a few years ago" did exist.

I hear you. I couldn't believe how much better our deck looked after a few hours with a paint brush and a few gallons of "Cape Cod Gray" wood stain. We replaced the roof when we bought the house, and had the entire upper floor professionally repainted. We also pulled up the violet wall-to-wall carpet and refinished the hardwood floors. We replaced most of the windows with new, weathertight units, and finally got a lawn to grow this summer (not so easy with our sandy soil, unless you're willing to re-do the whole thing and spread loam. We weren't, so we resorted to large doses of nitrogen fertilizer).

Clear across town...about 500 feet.

No, I'm kidding.

We are about 10 miles away to the Northwest from where we used to live...and in fact, we are back in the same general neighborhood we lived in when we first got married 21 years ago.

I far bigger house and with actual flush toilets, too.

Yee-hah!!!

[just kidding, JMJ]

No Porsche yet. The Passat will be housed next to the Touareg in the (attached) garage, thank you.

You left coast dudes need a car to get everywhere. To park a car in a NYC
garage is a 3 or 4 digit expense. Even the bankrupt Donald Trump is carted around the city by his entourage. Saw him recently. Money can get you the best babes on the planet even with a ridiculous comb-over.

Not our fault.

#1 GM convinced most cities in the 50s/60s to abandon light rail services in favor of buses.

#2 California is way bigger than New York.

#3 I've been in NY rush hour traffic...and to be honest, I don't see a whole lot of difference between it and LA or SF.
