I've got one. If you want something that holds hours of music, an Ipod is probably a better bet. But the MD is more convenient than my discman was. And a hell of a lot cheaper than an Ipod. A basic one is now probably close to 100 US. Discs probably about $3. The software for transferring music from computer to disc is fast - under 20 minutes (closer to 15 maybe, can't remember right now) for a 70 minute album. Mine is the original Sony format, so one disc holds 140 min. of music, at sound quality that is fine for me on headphones. I assume it is just as good as Ipod format, supposedly better than mp3. Haven't been able to make it skip, and I get about 30 hrs of listening on one AA battery.
Haven't yet heard a Hi-MD, that gets something like 40 hrs of music on one disc.
Unlike an Ipod, you can record direct from a CD player onto a mini-disc, fully digital (if CD player is new enough to have digital out). And the higher end models also have mic input, but not many of them. I have access to one with that, but have never tried recording a concert yet.
So, would I recommend it? Sure, as long as you don't mind copying discs occassionally.
