Ivo Perelman - Sieiro

on leo CD LR 271

have no idea if it still available - and old favorite of mine that as I recall was never really listened to by very many(I think Walter Horn liked this one quite a bit as I obviously do)

Ivo on tenor (and another unmentionable instrument on the closing track)

with:

Thomas Ulrich - cello
Dominic Duval - bass
Jay Rosen - drums

this is the Perleman recording that destroys myths of chicanery

stunning, powerful and thoroughly evocative - check the closing section of the opening title track

the tenor and cello meld together and break apart in mysterious ways - with Duvall's bass being recorded so well (the sound of the recording is spectacular) - the strings with the emotive Perelman tenor gives this music a very compelling and unique sound.

one of those recordings where one never knows if it is written or just played - here I don't think a note or a phrase has been written down - but it sure sounds like some sketches were done to frame the free improvisations - or does only Ivo know of the opening salvo of Rush Hour?

very special music

for those who have only heard Ivo's stuff like Brazilian Connection - along with trio recordings Seeds, Visions & Counterpoint and possibly Sad Life - this is the center (and the apex) of his later 90's recordings - and part of it's neauty is the restraint and beauty of his playing - plus there is no "soloing" over rhythm - this is truly colectively improvised music of the highest order - and when the restraint leaves - hold onto your limbs, brains and anything else within shouting distannce

lordy lordy

Hell yeah! This is my favorite Perelman. I think his first attempt at something like this was the one with the CT String Quartet, but it wasn't quite as successful (the CT SQ would go on to record two amazing recordings on Leo - 'The Navigator' was one of my favorite recordings of the 90's). And, and you said Steve, it is precisely the intimate dialogue between Perelman and Ulrich that makes this recording sound so beautiful.

It's my favorite Perelman (and Ulrich) recording too.

But, as OZ well knows, I like it even better when I get to spell its name wrong....repeatedly.

Ivo has a gig coming up at Tonic next month. I may try to make it. Happily (for me), neither Duval nor Rosen will be with him.

Just got it - made it through the first two tunes so far, definitely like the second much better than the first. It's not what I would call in my sweet spot, but it's interesting and challenging music. I'll give it a deeper and more extended listening as soon as I can.

I have to admit, after hearing the first track, I didn't expect to like this at all. And this is not the sort of stuff I really dig typically, to be fair. But it's seriously growing on me, and I'm only about 70% of the way through my first listen. I am really digging Perelman's playing - I've got "The link" on right now, and the give-and-take between Ulrich and Perelman is really pretty cool. I liked Perelman's tone and lines on "Rush Hour" and "Santana," too - both tracks really pulled me in. I'm still not really a fan of the screachier passages - I like Perelman's playing better in the middle registers, but the screechy stuff isn't enough really to turn me off. "Rush Hour," more than anything else thus far, is what's sold me on the disk (and made me not regret buying it), but I am really, really enjoying, "The link" right now - seriously digging it as I type this. I like Rosen's fills and accents. It's a departure from what I normally dig and listen to, and I'm glad I took the detour. Thanks Steve, et al, for the rec!

I do NOT, FWIW, much care for "The Vermicello." In fact, it's my least favorite track on the album by far. I was liking Rosen's drums on it and just kept wishing everyone else would fucking shut up.

I turn the disc off before that track - where Ivo plays the infamous Tromvino

because it one of those handmade bullshit instruments

Ivo should stick to the tenor - it is a weak way to close out an otherwise great album

opster - don't you also like Sedds, Vision * Counterpoint

would oove to hear the new one you mentioned - sounds very promising

only handmade instrument I know of that makes a cool sound is Mats' flutephone

You think machine-made instruments are inherently superior?

I think you know what I mean Pete - you know putting a saxophone mouthpiece on a trombone - that is the tromvino, I think

I think made up instruments are gimmicky, that's all

I think the electronic stuff is whole other thing - I think that music is a whole other thing - and when I listen to it, I don't listen for the instruments anyway

The saxophone was a "made-up" instrument of relatively recent vintage whose purpose was to give woodwinds the power of brass for use in marching bands.

Exactly the "tenor trombivo" (meanig than there is other kind of trombivo? Like alto trombivo, baryton trombivo and the too much unknown sopranino trombivo?)

No no, preacher, I know, love and own "Sieiro" among others Perelman as "Geometry", "Sad Life", "The Hammer", "Sound Hierarchy", "Seeds, Visions And counterpoint", "The Ventriloquist" and the last of its kind for the moment, the excellent "Suite For Helen F" who is as great as his best works but who seems to have got some restrictive critics.

BTW, my favorite is "Sad Life" before "Sieiro" and "The Hammer" (a no prisoner album if there is one, but you all know that).

well i am listening to Assimptotica rite now as i type. the so called tromboninvino or whatever sounds pretty good and funny. it reminds me a lil of braxton's contrabass sax or clarinet sounds.

i bet that if you didnt know what he was playing that u would think that it was just perelman digging into some crazy saxy sounds ...it's kinda what avant garde is about. i think the instrument worked pretty well.

check out joachim gies an entire solo cd with manipulated instruments. i think it is a 'special.' walto holds that gies covers the entire 12 tone vocabulary or something... i think youre kinda getting caught in traditional...what is legitimate trap...the trombivo is an ok gimmick..

yea steve i love Seeds, Visions And Counterpoint which is one of my favorite cds. that's my favorite perelman...

So, Steve, will I see you at Tonic tomorrow? The only other time I saw Ivo, you were there, at the Knit, after a Joe Maneri set. Maneri put me to sleep and Perelman woke me up.
