the dark tree

I know - been talked about for years - and here I will pat myself on the back - I think must have bought just about the last known copy back in the late 90's - years before it was rereleased with both volumes

for Peter form SF

and no - no more info needed except........

on bass, Cecil McBee

on trap drums, Andrew Cyrille

on b-flat clarinet, John Caaaarter

RIP, Horace

for my money, the greatest live recording since the Plugged Nickel

Lino's Pad, baby

The Dark Tree (both volumes) is the greatest album in my (admittedly tiny) collection. To me, it stands in a class by itself. I'll always be grateful to the JC posters who urged me to listen to it and the JC poster who was kind enough to send me a copy of it.

hail to the *great* Rita

and as you know - my heart is always on my sleeve - and I will never forget

you know - I missed Dennis & Oliver and also missed ny hero Papa Joe a week later

fwiw - you don't know how hard it has been not to be able to come in to meet you when you have come to NYC

harder than not meeting Dennis - in the you are so real and so transparent - so many should take your example of how to interact - certainly I have learned plenty

love you more than anyone I have never met - I know, sounds strange, but it it is the truth

close first over Darryl G Thomas - who is, of course, the nicest and most reasonable person I have vere encountered over these many years

buy "Nailed", rita

no light or shade - you will probably mot listen to it often - but it is kinda like Trane's Acsension - one listen every once a great while almost changes the way one feels and thinks

I love the Dark Tree, been a staple in my collection since originally released.

2 great Horace Tapscott memories:

His Arkestra was to play a free concert at McArthur Park in Los Angeles, must have been 1976 or 7, Horace was sick and in the hospital, his room overlooked the stage, so while the band played, you could see Horace in the window.

1988 or so, Horace played solo piano at the KJAZ studio in Alameda, there were 5 or 6 of us in the studio, and he played for about 20 or 30 minutes non-stop, mind boggingly beautiful, intricate, flowing, interesting music.

must be great memories, Peter

I'm a bit envious - I missed my only chance to see him here in NY before his passing when he played with a trio of I think Rufus Reid & Billy Drummond

anyone know if I have the names right - anyone here see the show?

he then cancelled a gig here shortly before his death

I had the great fortune to catch a saintly duo of -now both sadly departed- Horace Tapscott & Steve Lacy. Standing room only in the very intimate Western Front in Vancouver. It looked great on paper, but the duo was even more potent than the sum of its parts. The honesty & depth of interaction between those two giants was delightful to experience live!
